Disco, but in a Good Way

Patti 0:18
Hi, welcome to episode 454 of No Crying in Baseball, the Goals or Baskets or Whatever Episode. My name is Patti I'm here with my friend. Pottymouth, hey, Pattymouth,

Pottymouth 0:26
hey, it sounds like we're sportsing today. We are sportsing.

Patti 0:29
Excellent. We are, we are sports picturing, even sports picture, yeah, with sports moms.

Pottymouth 0:33
Oh, that's so good. Yeah. I love sports ing, yeah. And you

Patti 0:36
love, you love momming, yes? So it all works out, yeah, hey, we are drinking a very good beer, which ties into what you did this weekend. Yes, we

Pottymouth 0:44
threw a 90th birthday party for my father in law, and he was both surprised and survived the surprise. So both of those

Patti 0:52
are big. No, it's 90. It's like, right? How surprising is a surprise gonna be?

Pottymouth 0:58
That's good purpose is there? But we, we had it at great main brewery, and I highly recommend it. It's in Haymarket, Virginia. Question Is

Patti 1:07
it Maine, like a lion's mane, or Maine, like the state

Pottymouth 1:09
of Maine? It is, you know that you're the third person who's asked me that, which is very funny, the lion thing, and they've got the lion theme going on. They have some lion cornhole and, yeah, it's good thing. And they have a really good variety of beer right now we're drinking their West Coast IPA, and I can't remember it has Maine in the name, but it's very tasty. Yeah, yeah. And then we'll eventually move over to paleo.

Patti 1:31
All right, all right. I thought that was fun. I encouraged visiting family to stimulate the local economy, as this was like the one perfect spring weekend, which means, for sure, today, somebody in my presence said, Oh, it's too hot, yeah, today, like, all of a sudden, like, wait till tomorrow. But so my nephew came down from New York City with it, with his husband, and we did the stroll through, you know, our little local town, which was gorgeous, and everybody's outside and hanging out. The stores are freaking adorable, and people are saying hi and the whole thing. And then we ended up at sale a rojo, which is one of our favorite restaurants, sitting outside on their like, their little patio situation with the flowers, drinking bougie margaritas and eating delicious food like this. Is a very nice day. Yeah, yeah. I was very happy about that.

Pottymouth 2:17
It was a gorgeous weekend. Here I am really, like, bracing myself for tomorrow because we're gonna get heat and schools are not air

Patti 2:24
conditioned yet. Yeah, the other thing that I did was, you know, I planted some flowers, and the planner on my deck say it's going to be happy hour on the deck season, and it's my been so I have plans for that. I would love that this week. And the question is, is it going to be beautiful, or is it going to be like, 95 degrees, PM? It already too late?

Pottymouth 2:45
Could be it could be, well, wherever

Patti 2:47
you are, I hope you're having you had a lovely spring weekend. On today's show, we've got boyfriends, including streaks grief and some cross training and a really, really lucky shot. We've got so many opinions about the new city connects. There's all eight of them at one time. We've got a little ABS catch up, and we're cross training with it, with the pwhl, because we can.

Pottymouth 3:08
Cheers, cheers, fuck yeah, we can. Everyone's watching women's sports.

Patti 3:14
Everyone's watching women's sports. Can I tell you a cross training thing that's not actually women's sports, but it ended up being women's sports. One of my co workers said, Hey, on your podcast, do you ever talk about heated rivalry? And I said, Yes, we called that cross training, which led into me talking about going to see the pwhl heated rivalry reference signs, which not really seeing in the NHL currently. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Pottymouth 3:38
Anyway, they'll get there, right? Maybe, sure, sure. So did you see they had a look alike contest in DC?

Patti 3:46
I heard about that. That's like, that's, that's kind of where that conversation led heated rivalry dance parties. So there's a lot of things happening.

Pottymouth 3:55
All right? We're here for it. We're also here for the baseball. That's like, our main thing. And every week we talk about our baseball boyfriends, the guys that we picked in the off season, because they're cool. There's something special about each one. And now we have our fantasy teams, and things are getting exciting. And I just wanted to do an update on the guys that I talked about last week, because I kind of had a little bit not self criticism, like I wasn't criticizing them, but they got criticized like they both got in a little bit of trouble. So Casey Schmidt of the giants was told to catch the fucking ball by his teammate Matt Chapman, after he didn't catch the fucking ball a couple times, although Matt was also culpable, you know, I think that, you know, once in a while, maybe it's not so bad to say catch the fucking ball, although, you know, it's not the catching that he's improved on as much as the hitting, especially because he's been mostly DHing. So maybe also that had something

Patti 4:55
to do with catching of the aforementioned fucking

Pottymouth 4:59
so in. This week, since I talked about that, he has hit in each of the four games, two of the games he got a hit, and two of the games he got three hits. So that pulls his average for the week up to four, seven. You know, I should look that, is that the week, or is that overall? I'm gonna come back after you talk and see if I can verify this 417, average. That sounds about right for a week. It does sound about right for a week. Yeah, yeah. That is, you know what? I think that's overall. So he's 1.212 ops, you know, to be continued, because in April he hit 11 hits in 22 at bat. So that's 500 for April. Oh, so if you factor in a little bit of March. That means I am 99% sure that that 417, average is what he has right now as of time of recording or time of taking notes last night, 1.212 holy shit ops. So I have not been putting him on my lineup enough, but I sure as hell I'm gonna pay attention now the Orioles sort of smashed the Giants a little bit, took two out of three, but it was not Casey's fault. And in fact, Casey held those giants on his shoulders. Orioles pitcher, Kade Povich, holy shit, was heading toward perfection through four innings on his birthday, and then Casey blew that for him. And you know, Casey's my guys, so yay, I guess, but, but

Patti 6:22
he still had an amazing game. I mean, he came back from that. I mean, he gave up one run. He was and he's a baby, right? He's a baby, yes, I think, well, yeah, I think he was turning 26 so that's not so much of a baby. But the commentators were very funny. They were like, all over him, because he was having an amazing game. But also they noted for Casey that, well, he's doing great, and he even got yelled at this week. And also that Chairman was like, in a bad mood. I wonder if there's something going on that we don't know about, because, like, he was like, when he was striking out, he was like, outrageously angry about like, he wasn't, you know, interacting in that way. But he, like, just his expressions were like, this seems extreme. That is odd. So I'm a little concerned about his general well being. I think there's something else happening there.

Pottymouth 7:09
Yeah, I'm glad that Casey could, like, you know, rise to the occasion. He was the

Patti 7:12
highlight for the Giants for all of those games. He really was. I was like, Oh, wait, that's that guy. Oh, my God, look at him. Go, yeah.

Pottymouth 7:18
So in that game. So not only did he break that perfect game up in the fifth, but then he singled again in the seventh, and then he homered in the ninth. So those were his three hits. Yeah, not bad. My other guy that had some issues last year last week was Carter Jensen, who overslept. And, you know, I've had many a student and a co teacher who's done that as well. So he didn't get the snoot, or maybe he hit the snooze button, I don't know. But since the snooze, or since the lack of getting up after the snooze, he started six of eight games with Kansas City, since over sleeping on April 2, and in that time, he was six for 19. That's his 316 average, with three home runs and five RBIs. So he definitely like is trying to make up for it, which is really sweet. The I love the crazy math, because for the season, his average is only 211 but an 815 ops because of all those home runs. Sure. Nice job.

Patti 8:14
Yay. Good for him. So I talked about Drake Baldwin last week, because, you know, he got same sentences as Henry Aaron, so he had a five game RBI streak. Did not get an RBI Saturday, but did again on Sunday. So if he's just starting a new streak, but he's tied with Andy, pays for lead, leading 17 RBI like league leading,

Pottymouth 8:36
that's a lot. Why didn't he do this last year when he was on him

Patti 8:41
and Drake is leading in run scored with 15 so you know, last year's Rookie of the Year is doing okay. Little tiny bit of cross training. It turns out, he grew up with Cole Caulfield, who is the forward for the Montreal Canadiens. They played hockey together when they were teenagers. So when, when the when Montreal team came to Columbus to play their NHL game, he showed up wearing a Baldwin jersey, which is great. And then what he said, Well, they played together for Team Wisconsin and back when they were kids. So what Cole Caulfield said was watching a guy like that play not only baseball, but football too, and also play competitive hockey and be line mates with me was pretty special. And just how he was able to balance everything and do it every weekend was pretty cool to see. And Caulfield is having a career season right now. He has scored 50 goals for the first time in his career. So something magical about that little youth hockey team, and you know, like spitting these guys out to really, really perform well in in in professional sports is pretty cool. Yeah, cross

Pottymouth 9:43
training is a good thing, right?

Patti 9:44
I haven't mentioned Connor Norby, my Miami guy, because he has started with a slump, but he finally hit his first home run of the season on Wednesday versus the reds. It was also his first multi hit game of the season. He's got a lot of challenges right now because he's a national third baseman. He's been playing first base, because I'm Christopher Morrell, has been out with an oblique string, so he's got like, a couple things mixed up. But he did say that he feels bad. Like, last year he was good for a while, then he took a downturn, and he said he freaked out last year, and this year he's like, nope. I He didn't say the word Zen, but it sounds like Zen, like he's like, finding what's the good thing? Well, my swing is better. Well, this is better, and kind of hanging on to that, so it looks like he's kind of like, kind of getting out of it, which is pretty good. My Tampa Bay boyfriend got sent back down, Carson Williams, so because he was only up filling in for Taylor walls, Oh, okay. And Taylor walls is back off the Il. So Carson went back down, which gave me a chance to add cam Smith from Houston, who I should have probably had to begin with only, and also the fact that he went Four for five with two doubles or run scored in two RBI on Saturday against the mariners. He's had four multi hit games so far and at least one hit in nine of the last 11 games. So perhaps things might look up a little bit from my fantasy team. We'll see.

Pottymouth 11:04
That's impressive, yeah. And, you know, I gotta tip my hat to Tampa for sweeping the Yankees. It's been a it's been an interesting like the Al East is crazy now. Well, it's

Patti 11:14
funny, because, you know, Baltimore was behind both of those teams. So I'm like, they're all tied. It's like, well, yeah, yeah. But for a minute there was like, Can they both lose, right, right? You know, we've had this conversation. It's like, can, can everybody who's above my team in the standings, can they just both lose even when they're playing? And that answer is, No, they can't. But yay. But at

Pottymouth 11:33
least you could be happy that somebody loses. Like, you can look at the lose, lose, so no one is like, you know, right, stretching out. Yeah, that's it. That's it. We were just happy that somebody would lose because we're below all y'all, but not much, not as much as before. Red Sox baseball. I We sometimes check up on our former baseball boyfriends because we can't pick anybody two years in a row except for one guy. There's always an exception to every rule, but most of the guys, we have to say, See you later, but we're going to keep an eye on you, if we like you. And I didn't get to talk about Ronnie Mauricio at all. Last year, he was a very top prospect, if not the top, for the Mets, depending on where you look for after the 2023 season, and then in that off season, he went and played in lead arm in the Dominican Republic, and tore his ACL with the tigrays daily say, bummer. So he was out all of 2024 and that I chose him because I was thinking, all right, he was like, super hot, and then he got this little injury. And I love the Dominican League, so I want to feel like it's not going to be really bad for him. He's going to come out of it better than before. And that didn't really happen. So he played 61 games last year, and it's just because he wasn't doing that well. So he was called up on Monday because Juan Soto, you may have heard, is on the aisle. So Mets fandom is shaking right now a little bit. I don't know. I've heard like people are generally positive they have a lot going for them. So they called him up, but not as a real Soto sub. They shuffled things around and said, pretty much you're going to be pinch hitting or the bench like another guy on the team, and Carlos Mendoza and the manager said to him, Hey, man, the opportunity is not here yet, so like you're not being this is not your call up, call up, but you have to stay ready, because it happens fast. So he took that to heart, and he was called in to pinch hit for Tyrone Taylor in the bottom of the 10th with a runner on third, and he was down zero to two on the count. And last year, when he had an 02 count, he was one for 27 Well, this time, he hit the ball. His first hit of the season was a walk off single. He's the fifth met in history with a walk off as his first hit of the season. Since then, he has not done anything remarkable that we're recording on Monday. I didn't check over the weekend. I know he didn't get a hit on Friday, but I did take a quick peek at the guy that I chose this year for the Mets, who I'd really like to see playing, Nick Morabito. And he's actually has better AAA numbers than Ronnie Mauricio. Nick Morabito has got like a 295, average and eight something ops. And you know what? I mean, He's younger. I get it. He's got more like time to spend, but I also have a fantasy team, like I got a right to what about me? Yeah, um, all right, I'm gonna take a sad turn, and I don't generally like dwelling on sad, but I really feel like it's important for us all to be aware of these players as human beings and as people who go through major struggles and have to keep playing baseball for us, and you know, the huge fan bases that depend on it. So a couple of my former baseball boyfriends, actually, three of them this week lost a parent, which is a lot three of them. Yeah, yeah.

So first Miggy Rojas, his father, Miggy Rojas, Miguel Rojas senior, died suddenly on Tuesday from a heart attack at home in Venezuela. So Miggy sat out Tuesday. There was a little bit of, you know, it didn't come out to the news right away. It was he's sitting for family problems. And it was the first of a three game series in Toronto. So this is the much like waited for rematch of Dodgers versus blue jays, and everybody's looking at Miguel Rojas because he got the tying home run in game. Shit. I didn't write it down six or seven one, I think it was seven. The key to like, keeping it going. And he's not playing, and he decided to play on Wednesday, so you can get bereavement leave. It's a three day thing. He said quote, I decided to stay and do what my father would like me to do, which is to play baseball. He's got a first row seat to watch me play here in this special place that brought so many memories to my family. So, you know, a lot of pressure there. He didn't get a hit that night, but he did get a walk, and he scored a run, and then he got two hits on Friday. He kept playing. So what I sort of you know wanted to go back to is what we've talked about before with Venezuelan players. He really couldn't go back to Venezuela for the funeral. So number one, timing, the funeral was Wednesday, and he found out on Tuesday, so that would be super tough. But because of the political situation, your visa has to get reapplied. And so if he were to go back to Venezuela, who knows how long it would have taken for him to come back, and what a horrible, shitty situation to have to make and then to still played Dodgers baseball, right? Like, I can't even imagine his father never saw him play in the United States. Oh, geez. So I'm not sure, like, I couldn't quite, you know, figure out if that was visa or if that was family decisions, but Miguel said that's why he went back as many winters as he could to play in the Venezuelan league with the tiberones de guerra his father's team so that his father could see him play. And he did play seven seasons with them, the last one was in 2023

and he also says that, you know, his baseball boyfriend cred that give back to others. He's talked about wanting others, his teammates, to do better than himself, like being more concerned about propping them up than focusing on his own stuff. And he said he gets that from his dad, he said, and just want other people to be successful, because if they're good, I'll be okay too. And Dave Roberts has noticed this, and there was an article this week about him basically giving him the green light to go for being a manager someday. You know, he is his blessing. He said that he's got the credit credentials for it. He's now got this, you know, hot World Series moment, which Dave Roberts clearly had. But also, you know, a lot of know how and and that being personable, like all his teammates love him. He is retiring this year, and he's gonna stay with the Dodgers with player development, so we'll see what happens. You know, super condolences to Miguel Rojas, and it's just we don't know what these guys are going through and what they have to deal with a couple others. So two baseball boyfriends, Nathaniel and Josh Lowe. I picked Nathaniel in 2023 when he was with the Rangers. He's been a couple places since then. He was with the NATs for a hot moment. And Josh, who's with the rays, and was with the rays in 2024 so I talked about in I think it was October 23 that they I think they announced it then that their mother had been diagnosed with brain cancer in July. So understandably, taking time for the family to deal with it and how you want to communicate with the press, because it's not easy. So I think I first talked about their mom, because she did one of those split Jersey things, which are now all the rage with all the moms who have kids on different teams. You know, half one kid and half the other kid. I think mama Kelsey was like one of the first big, big ones in the in the football world. And after the diagnosis, they they actually faced each other in the wild card, but she couldn't go due to chemo. So sadly, to say, she she passed this past March, and so the brothers faced each other again for the first time since their mom died in March and talked about it. I think there was a little bit of news then, but more news now that they were together and their dad was there. And I think Josh is the one who said, so glioblastoma is it, for those who don't know, is a super, usually fast moving, very aggressive brain tumor, brain tumor. And he says, for her to give it 33 months of fight was something pretty special, but at the end of the day, I'm happy she's done hurting. I'm. Glad she can rest. She gave us a great life, and she was a great mom. You can't really ask for a lot more other than that. So heartbreaking. I mean, losing a mom at any age and for these guys to still have to play baseball, and even though it's been, you know, not even a month, that's not a lot of time. So they faced each other. The angels beat the reds. Oh shit. So which one Josh is on the angels? Nathaniel's on the reds. Josh is the one who, sort of like had a banner evening. Nathaniel was brought in to pinch hit in the eighth so they actually got to be on the field together. And he was on the field when Josh struck out at the end of the game. But Josh got shoot. I didn't even write how many hits he got. He did. He did a lot in that, you know, tend to sturdy win for the angels over the reds. But yeah, just, I think we just need to keep in mind that we've got to keep our fandoms in check and realize that we we don't know, like, these are the things that we know, but not everybody's gonna you

Patti 21:07
know, right? You're they're allowed to keep private things private if they choose. If they want to share, they can share, but it's not up to us. Yeah, yeah. They're not there for our entertainment. 100% Yeah, yeah. That's what their jobs are, right? Not what their lives are exactly. I'm going to talk about the two things that broke in each row Suzuki's life this weekend, and I'm going to do in the context of Shohei Ohtani, who's a former baseball boyfriend of mine, the first thing that broke was Shohei atani broke each row Suzuki's on base street streak, the record for a Japanese born MLB player on Friday, right? So the show Hey streak was at 44 that was like the like, we broke, broke each row streak on Friday. And of course, he also got on base the next two games. So he's actually now at 46 which is the longest active streak in MLB. The longest streak period in MLB is Ted Williams, with the MLB record at 86 that's gonna be hard to match.

Pottymouth 22:05
I just want to clarify. I think you might have heard me say, oh shit. And that was because I had a party foul while opening this beer, but it wasn't because of each euro.

Patti 22:14
Do you need to while you're saying you want to tell us about what this Oh yes. Back to each

Pottymouth 22:18
row the other. I've made quite a mess, but luckily, like, I guess I know to leave a rag in here at this point, because

Patti 22:25
I know you.

Pottymouth 22:27
Yeah, this is the fire berry Pale Ale from great main brewery. Then there you I can show

Patti 22:32
it to Oh, it is a very nice little lion logo. There, there you go, nice.

Pottymouth 22:37
And it says that it has, it says it's full of grapefruit. You tell me I don't think it's full of grapefruit, but I like it. I am

Patti 22:43
the person who will always tell you I don't like grapefruit, and then I'll end up having cocktails with grape. Oh, this is yummy. Palomas are good. Palomas, for instance, or there's that one it down the street where they do the caramelized grapefruit as a garnish. I'm like, this is the only way I'm gonna eat actual grapefruit.

Pottymouth 22:57
Do you think caramelized? And that's a whole nother back to Shohei,

Patti 23:01
oh yeah, and also back to, actually, back to Ichiro so all time hits leader, right between his career in Japan and his career here. So Seattle honored him with a statue in front of T Mobile Park, the you know, baseball, the ballpark in Seattle. And his best friends, Ken Griffey Jr and Edgar Martinez pulled the tarp off the statue and the bat, part of the statue came with it. They broke the bat in the unveiling, and Ken Griffey Jr immediately said, I didn't do it.

Pottymouth 23:36
Of course, it's like the two kids. I'm just wondering, like, what was the issue? Was it the the the strength of the pole? Was it the angle of the tug? Was it the flimsiness of the bat, like

Patti 23:47
I wear? Just don't know it got fixed, like right away. But each year was actually pretty funny. He was very funny through his interpreter, because he said he actually blamed Mariano Rivera because of all the broken bat cutters that he threw. He's like, Oh, that's really good, right? That's a good joke. And a fun fact is the sculptor lucella, he's also the one who created the statues of Ken Griffey, JR And Edgar Martinez that are also in that ballpark with nothing broken and none of those things broke. I don't know if it's part of like the batting stance. I don't know what happened, but we're moving on to Joe Adele, who I talked about last week because of his three home run robberies, which were pretty incredible. And you actually noted at the time that really incredible photo from the back, yeah, of him standing with his mitt in the air. And the lighting is perfect, and it's just this, like, really glorious, heroic photo, yeah. Oh, we have the background story on this photo now. Oh, really, it was taken by Kaylee Kraus, who was sitting, you know, right there, wow, with her seven year old son and her husband. And the piece that I read, she's a sports mom, so she knows to, like, be ready. So. What she said was, we have a bunch of adult children. They all played sports. I've just been used to grabbing my phone as fast as I can to take pictures of them getting goals or baskets or whatever good. So she was like, just like, right there, and she was on it, and because they were in that row, like, right behind where Joe had no flipped over the wall, and they're actually in all the photos that's the front, including tops made a baseball card, and they're on that. And tops also contacted her because they want to do a baseball card using her photo. And this all happened because the angels actually posted on Instagram whatever, saying, Send us your best photos. Oh, wow. And it's just that night she submitted it, and all of a sudden everyone was all like, Mike Trout is commenting on it, like everybody's coming on this photo. And all of a sudden it became this iconic moment that she captured, because she was in the right place at the right time, and she's a sports mom, so she knows what to do. That is

Pottymouth 25:53
so good. I'm just thinking, if they're selling that photo, she should get some royalties on those cards.

Patti 25:59
I'm hoping they buy the rights to that photo, and that seven year old gets put through college

Pottymouth 26:03
right that

Patti 26:05
way, do it the right way, and just buying his books that's still alive and

Pottymouth 26:10
and it's sort of like a, you know, a friendly reminder to all of this to, like, stay stay alert. You never know what's gonna happen.

Patti 26:17
You never know what's gonna happen. I mean, they tell you to stay alert so you can, like, catch the batted balls. They don't tell you to catch the actual baseball players that come flying over

Pottymouth 26:24
the wall. It's like, how you've limited hands. I'm thinking, like, one hands on my beer, one hands on my camera. Like, what I I'm done, that's it. Yeah, I think, I

Patti 26:34
think I would spill my beer for that shot. You would not, I'm just guessing, yeah, you would prioritize differently. That's probably, I don't know, but they also don't. They go to games about once a week. So I love the fact that they are Die Hard angels fans, which is tough in Los Angeles, where everybody's a Dodger fan, sure. So that's pretty cool. And they don't usually sit in those seats. I just happen to get a deal in those seats, like, why not? Maybe we'll catch a home run.

Pottymouth 26:59
We'll sit there. Oh man, yeah, I'm thinking like us on our road trip too. We've got to, yeah, we're

Patti 27:05
all, we're the cheap seats,

Pottymouth 27:06
everything though, that we are. We could probably squeeze in and outfield, mate, we might be able to, well, we'll see what happens. I don't

Patti 27:13
care to sit in the outfield most of the time because I want to be closer to the action. And yet, these things happen right now. That would be cool, right? That would be cool. Hey. So we're actually, we're recording on Monday night, because we have things this weekend, and so I we haven't recorded yet when they announced the the players of the week, which allows me to say that my former nationals boyfriend James Woods was named the NL Player of the Week for the past week, where he hit for the week, hit 545, he had three doubles, three home runs, eight runs. Scored eight RBI, two stolen bases in four wins, including a sweep of Milwaukee. That's amazing. Who's like my pick for winning that division. But best of all, one of those two steals was a home base in a game where he also homered. So he's the first Washington National to steal home and hit a home run in the same game.

Pottymouth 28:01
That is amazing. Yeah, the NATs are fun right now. They are not

Patti 28:07
pick them as fun to watch and they are fun to watch. We gotta get our butts back. Can I just tell you that I have friends who we're making plans to go to a nats game just days before our epic road trip, they would check with me, because it's, I gotta say it out loud, Hello Kitty night. So they want to get the special tickets to get the Hello Kitty jerseys. Um, so I was coaching on Wow, here are the people do that. Here are the available sections. Yeah, and I'm like, cheap cheap seats, cheap seats, cheap seats. And of course, they're all seats that I hate, like outfield seats or under scoreboard but I want to encourage people who don't normally go to baseball games to go to baseball games. So I'm doing it also means you will see me at some point on the epic road trip wearing a Hello Kitty Washington Nationals jersey, which is really going to destroy any serious baseball cred, but I don't know.

Pottymouth 28:58
Maybe not, wow,

Patti 29:00
maybe appearing in like, a whole other city, wearing that would be like, okay, yeah, okay, you're okay, yeah.

Pottymouth 29:07
I was thinking today about, like, packing for this trip is gonna be hysterical. Baseball, like, it's just t shirts, jerseys, great.

Patti 29:15
It'll be great. Thankfully, the summer trip, everything's gonna be very small. Oh, hey,

Pottymouth 29:18
speaking, speaking of fashion, wow, we have opinions about fashion. So any opinions the folks, when? Do you know when they said that they were going to drop all city connects in one day? I don't know, because

Patti 29:32
that's that hasn't happened. The past several years. It's been they've been rolling them out like every

Pottymouth 29:37
two weeks, and boom, we've got eight, eight right to talk about today. And I just wanted to give a little bit of background about the city connect thing. So when they decided that they could, you know, make money on this alternate uniform thing, started in 2021 that first year, there were seven teams. No, eight. Wait, red, SOX Marlins, white, SOX cubs, Diamondbacks, Josh. Science Dodgers, that's seven. I counted on my fingers. And then six.

Patti 30:05
But okay, wait, dodgers, okay, seven, you're right.

Pottymouth 30:07
And then there were seven more in 2022 and then there were six more in 2023 and then it turns out. So then they made rules and said, you know, this is going so well, how about we get another version? So teams get to have version 2.0 after a three year rotation, but it didn't all happen at the same time. So in 2024 the Dodgers got their 2.0 like you know could be argued that they needed it the most at that point, plus plus eight newbies, so doctors could actually do 3.0 next year, which they might need, but because they're, they're 2.0 wasn't even that different than their 1.0 which wasn't different than Sure, any of them. Yeah, they all kind of look like Dodgers jerseys, yeah, those, yeah,

Patti 30:53
well, probably sort of spanishy,

Pottymouth 30:55
right, exactly. But they're all like colored, sort of the same, I think. And I didn't look this up, is it the Yankees are the only ones who haven't joined the fund. That is true. Yeah, of course, of course. So the newbies this year that we're going to talk about are Atlanta, the Orioles, the reds, the Royals, the Brewers, the pirates, the Padres and the Rangers.

Patti 31:15
By newbies, you mean the two point zeros?

Pottymouth 31:16
Yes, right, right. Exactly. This year's two point zeros. Nobody's three, nobody's one, they're all two. I don't think any of them are really bad. Like, there's nothing that I look at and go, Ooh, that was a bad decision. Like, you know, I had feelings about the San Francisco missed I'm thinking about and maybe the Rangers first one. I'm trying to think of the ones that I was like, not those. I don't feel that bad about these. All of them have good parts. I have very mixed feelings about the fun stuff being hidden, because I know that was an issue with Baltimore. I feel like Baltimore is getting a lot of shit for their first version. I like it. And I mean, I understand the trim could be more visible, but I like it

Patti 31:59
Well, Ed, Baltimore heard that, and they actually changed the guys uniforms to actually flip those borders up. So I don't know if they just flipped their existing ones up and sewed them there, but they they did not hide it any longer,

Pottymouth 32:11
because it's so nice. A lot of these new ones have cool things in the neck, which you can only see if you're putting your jersey on. So I don't know it's a choice. I guess it's kind of like a fun, like, you know, Treasure Hunt kind of thing the fans are like. So I think you've said this a lot before. What's most important is that fans can identify with it and feel like it's meaningful for their city. They are pricey 180 for like, the not exactly like the players use versions up to 360 so it gets more pricey if you want more details, or the actual fabric that the players use, or the actual cut that the players use. So we're going to start off with our beloved Baltimore Orioles, and I think they I love their old one. I really love their old one, and I like the new one, and they're different, and I appreciate that. I like the classic bird. I think it's a nice throwback. And I think that they did really well with the meaningful details that you're gonna say more about than or, you know, definitely know more about than me. And the only thing that I've seen them get a little bit shit for is the be more. I think that's great, because be more like, sure it's, I think it's a great it's, it's a civil and I like thing be more.

Patti 33:29
I will say, our intern, who now lives in Baltimore, said, Charm City. I'm okay with, I'm okay with either. I'm lost, but I'm okay with 3.0

Pottymouth 33:38
the intern to work on, 3.0 3.0

Patti 33:41
but I will say Baltimore really embraces the city part of city Connect. Some of the ones we're going to talk about are like, Oh, they look at the state, they look at something else that's not tying it to the city. But the theme of this year's O's city Connect is from the stoop to the yard. We're talking the front stoop is a lot of row houses ladder. If the people hang out on their front steps in Baltimore, that's the neighborhood thing. So from the stoop to the yard, I think was a little bit of brilliance, again, for the people who know, yeah, I mean, it may not make me be meaningful for anybody

Pottymouth 34:13
outside of Baltimore, but they're not buying

Patti 34:15
the jerseys. But they're not buying the jerseys. The Green, which is thank you, an unusual color in a baseball uniform. It's the color of the seats in Camden this. This is embracing Orioles park at Camden Yards, yeah, and the relationship of the neighborhoods to Orioles Park. So it's the color of the seats, the style of the bee is the old timey Baltimore B but also it's on the seats. If you look at the sides of the seats, that's the bee. That's part of the metal that makes up the seats. Was a nod to the Brick Warehouse. My favorite thing is the the home run marker. So when, when balls leave the yard and land on Utah Street, it was sort of like the pedestrian piece between the big old warehouse and the ballpark proper that gets marked with this round marker like this, this baseball at this date by. This person, you know, was the hard one I hit here, they've got that on there, which also says, from the stoop to the yard, they've got the clock. The iconic clock is on there. Like, take all my money, yeah. And in fact, the intern is taking all my money, because the intern, right as we are recording at the game at Orioles Park, Camden Yards, hopefully buying me a gunner. Henderson, wow city connect jersey. I said backup, backups would be Samuel bosayo Or a Jackson holiday but gunner, Gunner Henderson has been hitting a lot of home runs that he's fun to watch, but also the hoodies good. So who knows, they may, in fact, take all my money. But so I've got two out of these eight that I think are really very good, and the rest, some are fine. And some I just don't get but it's not about me. And some are like, No, Why'd you bother?

Pottymouth 35:44
Yeah, yeah, that's, that's so awesome. And if anybody out there who hasn't been to Camden yard, go and look. It's, I like, just walking around looking at those baseball markers. They're so fun because you can find your team. You know your players have hit home runs there. All right. Next up is Cincinnati. It's very red. And I have issues with our editing thing, with being too red. So anything too red, just I get it, they're the reds. So I'm going to give them a little bit of pass on that. I feel like I liked the city connects better that have more than one predominant color. And yeah, they got the black and the white trim, but it is very, very red. I read something about it being a nod to the time when they had the vest sleeveless, because this the pinstripe stop at the shoulder. And I'm thinking, why stop there? Bring back the biceps. Show us your biceps. Yes, gun's out. Sun's out. Come on. Like, like, Why? Why not like, I don't, I don't like the subtlety hit me over that with

Patti 36:44
five shades of red. Didn't hit you overhead. I mean, that's not subtle at all, right? The thing that they chose to do, which I think is interesting, I mean, they're they're black. Their former ones are based are really popular in Cincinnati. It's another one that I'm like, It's fine. It's not about me, right? Go ahead. But a lot of people there really like them. They designed this one to go with that

Pottymouth 37:07
one so families

Patti 37:09
will look really cool. So for their Christmas card shot, they can be wearing a variety of city connects and all go together, which was interesting. I don't understand how it ties to the city. I just don't I know a lot of things about Cincinnati, and I don't see any of those things reflected so much in the uniform. But they, they wanted it to go with the old ones, because the old ones are popular. Great. They did that. I'm not buying it, but I hope people who are there like relate

Pottymouth 37:35
to it. Like it, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the biggest thing, really is, like, the people who are gonna buy it should want it the pirates, I'm pretty okay with. I mean, so the pirates are, like, sticking to that black and gold kind of theme. They're not going to stray through their colors, which is a choice, and that's fine. I like the pirate like I like the the cap and the sleeve actual pirate. The drippy letters are very piratey looking, but they're also a nod to the bridges that are right next to the stadium. I still am looking for more. I feel like there could be more detail

Patti 38:11
on this one. See, that's interesting. When I go to PNC Park, which is one of my favorite ballparks. I love that ballpark. I really like the view of the bridges. I appreciate the bridges. I did not get that from looking at that. I got this is a piratey font, yeah? Which, I think, what I thought, I don't in my head, it wasn't a Pittsburgh font, yeah, it was a piratey font. Again, I'm with you. I like the actual pirate face on there and those things. It's fine, yeah? It's fine,

Pottymouth 38:36
yeah, black and gold till they go, all right, Kansas City, I think there's been a lot of comments about how it's very much of the BI pride kind of thing. It's got the, like, the bisexual the flag colors, which I'm I think that's great, like, I would like to see, you know, I feel like the NATs last one was very much trans colors. So I think it's great to have like, these color schemes that mean good things to a lot of people, and keep that up. The Crown, I think so the one, the one on the shirt, has a little bit of white around it that makes it look kind of like a crown. If you were to show me the one on the hat, I would have said smiley faces or waves or something. I wouldn't have said crown.

Patti 39:17
Yeah, waves actually works, because their idea was to tie it to this being the City of Fountains. Okay? I also don't care for the hat. I like the jerseys. They will tell you it's not pink. However, they'll tell you it's fuchsia.

Pottymouth 39:28
Yeah, well, so yeah, that's what they're gonna say. I think they're

Patti 39:31
gonna say it goes like, you know, kind of like the gradients from fuchsia to blue. I like that the base of it is white, because that's also a little bit rare. It feels kind of disco to me, but I mean that in a good way, that that's great. But this is one of those cases where I like the jersey, don't care for the cap, but I feel like, okay, they have they had a they had a plan. There's some throwback in what the R looks like. It's an old logo. R, that's That's great. I'm okay with it. Yeah, I'm okay with it.

Pottymouth 39:58
And I like the. It's different from anything that they have. Like, it's very distant,

Patti 40:03
yeah, so, like, like, Pittsburgh is really leaning into Yeah. All of our teams are these colors, yes, and we're sticking with it fine. I kind of think, you know, this is an opportunity to try something new,

Pottymouth 40:13
yeah, at least, like, a little pattern, like, it's just so black, like, it's, yeah, all right, another team that does with the color is Atlanta, and I'm happy because it says Atlanta, like it doesn't say the name that we don't use. It says Atlanta. I like the 80s. I appreciate the V neck. I think they could have done better on their details, because the sleeve is the ATL. And I'm like, I don't know if that's special for anything. Yeah, it's, it's,

Patti 40:41
it looks like tbs. It's a nod to the TBS superstation, because it's a throwback to that time where everybody watched the Atlanta team play, because everybody who finally got cable had tbs. So everybody watched the Atlanta team,

Pottymouth 40:55
which is the thing that the most meaningful throwback watch their video.

Patti 40:59
Really, they're absolutely leaning into that. It was like, we used to be popular. We used to be popular. It was like, this whole, at the time, it was this whole, like, technology thing, like, we were, like, jumping on, like, our Ted Turner's our hero. They never say Ted Turner, but, you know, okay, that kind of thing. Like, I like the throwback colors. I liked the blue uniforms. I have this thing for the powder blue uniforms for a bunch of teams, like, shit is wearing. It's great, but I don't like that. They're aiming it at there's, they're like, celebrating, like, a cable station, yeah?

Pottymouth 41:26
That is, that's weird. That is super weird. Yeah, I'd rather, like, salute to the 80s, yeah.

Patti 41:31
So it feels like that. That's like, all the guy, I think, you know, the Atlanta's nice, the color is nice, yeah? But there's nothing else right, happening there. The things that are happening there are throwbacks to a TV network? Yeah, I don't care.

Pottymouth 41:43
Yeah, at least they did the V neck like with instead of the buttons.

Patti 41:47
The players wanted that because

Pottymouth 41:49
more company. Ah, that all spread. Navey, all right, Milwaukee, um, so I'm I just wanted, like state, my appreciation for more color. I just like more color. And I like that they have the sense that he accents and made that, you know, a little bit of extra splash of color for them. I feel like that's what's missing in some of the other more monochrome jerseys. So I don't know. I mean, the guy on the sleeve, like

Patti 42:18
he's their guy for years,

Pottymouth 42:21
is Wisco a thing? Well, that's

Patti 42:23
my actual question. I don't know if they're trying to make Wisco a thing. So the Milwaukee city Connect is one of the two that are embracing a statewide statement, because they're the only team in the states that statement. And you know, city connects, not state Connect. But they even said internally, we're calling it state connect, really, yeah, because they are like they do, because they are like, the only game in town. Okay, they do embrace like people do travel. They travel with groups to be like, in the ballpark together. So, okay, that's fine, but I don't know if whisk goes a thing or they're trying to make whisco a thing. This is the case where I actually like the cap better, because on the cap, they have the outline of the state, and they have the grill version of the of the logo. So it's like, yeah, we're tailgating. And you know, all of Wisconsin for this, I like the cap. Don't care for the jersey. Again, not about me, but is Wisco. Would think someone, someone tell us if that's for real, because it feels a little forced.

Pottymouth 43:26
Yeah. Actually, I have folks in Wisconsin who I need to give a call. Yeah, I will definitely do that.

Patti 43:30
I maybe when we're when we're at a brewers game, we can say, Hey, can you just right? Is that? Is that? Yeah, that's just

Pottymouth 43:37
like a cost. Anybody we see in New Jersey,

Patti 43:39
that's, yeah, that's pretty much like the tagline for the epic road trip is accosting everybody in every ballpark. Oh, it's gonna

Pottymouth 43:47
be so much fun San Diego. Yay. So good. Watch the promo video Now, granted, it's the only one that I saw, but it was so good. I love that there's Spanish forward. So like in their little Instagram post on this and in the video, Spanish comes first, yeah, and they embrace it in a really positive, honorable way. It's all about the Dia de los Muertos. I love the sleeve patch. I love the papel de picado, which is like Picardo means picked like, that's the pinpoint, the pinprick, right? Paper design that is in different colors, unlike Texas that we're gonna get to in a minute above the little tag. But I thumbs up in San Diego, and I remember you saying the first one, like, I wasn't super keen on but you're like, that's San Diego colors. Yeah, these are San Diego colors that Yeah. Like, if I were to buy one, like, if I were to be a fan. San Diego is the best of the bunch.

Patti 44:43
I think they're two for two. I think they embraced different things with each version, and they embraced them. Well, the first one was beach culture. Yeah, San Diego is a beach town. No way around it. It was very much the outdoor beach culture, where windsurfing were, you know, doing as the path. Styles, the, you know, the houses, whatever. That's great. And they did it very well. I Yeah, this one, I think they do an amazing job of talking about the the blending of cultures, not the replacing of cultures, not the making one culture. But we're appreciating all the pieces that make San Diego, San Diego, and this, this neighborhood is going to welcome you who are not from this neighborhood in to our culture, and this neighborhood is going to welcome you who are not of this neighborhood into this culture, and all those things are going to be represented. And when I first saw the muertos, I was like, I Why? Why is it on the jersey? Though, you know, I love the image, but Right? And the video helped. The video was like, we are about, you know, honoring the past and keeping those people have been important to us alive. So there's a bit in the in the promo about, you know, Tony Quinn and like other other, you know, Padres players of the past who are still part of the fabric. And I'm talking with my hands, so freaking but they are embracing being a binational city. And again, this was their city. It's a city Connect. But they are acknowledging we are a combination of a couple of things, and all of those things are equally important, and let's

Pottymouth 46:15
celebrate all of them absolutely. And then the parallel with the concept of Dia de los Muertos, which is, you know, what happens around what we call Halloween time is sort of honoring and celebrating the dead that they're still there. They go to the graves, and you bring pictures, and you bring tequila and all sorts of stuff. But it's, it's, it's a celebration, you know, more than something sad. And I loved how they did the parallel in the video about this is our, these are, like our heroes from the past that we are going to continue to celebrate.

Patti 46:45
Yeah, no. So they are two for two. So yeah. So my Yeah, my apps, absolutely, my two favorites are pretty

Pottymouth 46:51
clear to this. So for the bottom of the bunch, I would say is Texas, which is just red, just red, so they have the papel de te got

Patti 47:01
a J, I mean, come on. What more do you want? They have a J, yeah, so even,

Pottymouth 47:05
and even their little detail is red, so you can't see the patterns unless you look really close, because it's all so fucking red. So I feel like the reds, the Reds are the reds, like they get excused, and I understand that they're using this traditional red color from the plant in Texas. But, you know, did something else besides the j so

Patti 47:29
here I, I did watch their promo video, and it pissed me off, because, okay, so they're, they're the other team that went statewide, even though you might have heard of other baseball teams in Texas, but this the Rangers are claiming the entire state of Texas. Wow, fine. That's your own thing. Take it. But what are you doing is they're saying, whether you say it Texas or Tejas, it's all the same place. It's exactly the same. It's freaking All Lives Matter is what's happening in this one Jersey, and I may be spinning it a little bit out, but in comparison, immediately after San Diego, which is showing the importance of embracing other cultures, not negating other cultures, not saying, Oh, we're all the same. It's fine, right? It's like, oh no. It doesn't matter how you pronounce it. It's one state, as you know, we all like good food and dancing. It's fine, it's fine. It's not fine, it's not fine. You are negating other cultures by what you're doing. I'm not buying one.

Pottymouth 48:28
Oh god no. And you know, it's interesting, because, like, the two teams, the Texas has failed twice at this point, like, their first one wasn't that great, and this one is probably worse, and they are the only team to not have a pride night, right? And the Yankees were the second to last team to have a pride night. And I think they, you know, couched it in something else, but they're the ones who are not participating at all. So I feel like there's this weird correlation between, I don't know, I don't know, two things. I gotta say, I connect

Patti 48:59
two really good ones out of eight is not bad? Yeah, it's not bad.

Pottymouth 49:04
And nothing terrible, except for maybe Texas.

Patti 49:07
Yeah, Texas, I think just really missed it. Yeah, yeah. I think Texas meant well, and that gets you a c minus.

Pottymouth 49:14
Oh, I don't know if they really mean

Patti 49:17
well, c minus, yeah. I think that they are the people who say all lives matter and don't forget why that's a problem. Yeah, the San Diego designers would never say that, right? Like, we're embracing this culture, we're embracing that culture, and we are, like, giving them the Yeah, yeah, we're honoring good. Okay, wow, so we would love to hear about your opinions, because, yes, you know it's not just about us, even though, All right, last week, we kind of gave you a little ABS update, because, you know, we're gonna do that off and on throughout the season, because things happen. And I'm in, I'm personally interested in how this is going. I gotta say watching the O's giants games. I'm gonna call him little Brian. Robert. And I mean that in the best way. I love Brian Roberts, former O's. He was on the call, and he's so smart they usually have, you know, Ben and Jim, the Hall of Fame pitchers who are really smart and really fun. Yeah, they're both really good. But sometimes it's nice to have a hitter, sure, right? And a little Brian Roberts was on and he was talking about, and I say it with love, because he's one of my favorite former Orioles. But he was talking about, no, ABS is great. And he was like, he was picking out times like this switched a strikeout to a walk. Yeah, this, I mean that this was meaningful. And it's not like, don't use it frivolously, but use it when it's meaningful. Anyhow, a couple of highlights from the past week. Umpire will little has been challenged 10 times, and only one was overturned.

Pottymouth 50:48
Is so he's like leading the pack.

Patti 50:50
That's gotta feel good, right? Yeah, right. Chad Whitson had all of his seven challenges overturned. He's got to be feeling poorly. That sucks. Mike Estabrook had 11 of his 12 overturned, so I think he might have been the most challenged. And also then in

Pottymouth 51:10
this week. Yes.

Patti 51:13
Now for players, your former boyfriend, Logan, no hobby, has won 10 of his 12 challenges.

Pottymouth 51:18
Oh, hey. Well, he's a catcher.

Patti 51:20
12 challenges is a lot most. Most players who have challenged haven't challenged more than like twice. So the fact that he has challenged 12 times and been that successful is a big deal. But yes, like last time we talked about JT rambling too, like he had challenged me five times was pretty successful. This is huge. Winning 10 of 12 hobby a team. Success rates. The Tigers are at 75% success. The twins have the most challenges. They have challenged in the three weeks. They've challenged 32 times, including nine times in one game.

Pottymouth 51:55
That means they did well then.

Patti 51:57
But they're only that their success rate is

Pottymouth 51:58
only 62% well, they had one good game,

Patti 52:02
yes, if they had that many challenges, one game, yeah, like, because, you know, if you don't succeed, you lose that challenge. So you can follow these things on a site called Tap to challenge. Oh, that's so good. So there was another one that I talked about last week, but this one allows you to look at a team. It looks look at different players. You can search. You can have a little more fun with it, like you're interested in this one particular game, what happened, or what how this team is doing, or how this umpire is doing. You can search on all of those things. That's pretty cool.

Pottymouth 52:32
I will definitely check that out. That sounds talented. Challenge. Super fun. All right, really quickly I went just to mention women playing hockey, the professional women's hockey league update, because it has to do with Boston. So the Boston fleet sold out the garden. The Boston Garden this past Saturday, it was the second biggest attendance game. Because, of course, Madison Square Garden is bigger than Boston. Yeah, different garden. Governor Maura Healey power to her declared April 11 fleet day because of the fleet playing in the garden. And that's what you get when you have women in politics and also women on the ice. It's a good thing the Bruins showed up in their fleet jerseys for their game. So it was a double header. I guess I don't know what you call in hockey, like there were two games on the same day, but two different teams and not really a double header. The double header, all right, thank you. The Bruins and the fleet both played at the guy in the same day. I think it's fascinating that the Bruins were the matinee and the fleet were the main attraction. That's so great. I love that so much the fleet played at 7pm and zidania Chara all time like hero with the Bruins. 14 years with the Bruins captain, he got the Stanley Cup with them in 2011 played in the NHL. 21 years overall, including one brief year here in with the capitals, he dropped the puck for the fleet game. Nice. Sadly, the fleet lost against Montreal of all teams, but the good news is they had already clinched in the finals. Right now, they are number two behind aforementioned, not Montreal, but there's still a few games to go, including one that I'm going to go to. Their star defender Zoe Boyd is actually been on long term injured reserve, which I'm guessing is, P, W, H, L, I, L, wow, that's a lot of spoilers since February. But the cool thing is, she's been using her time off in a way that we definitely approve of. She's doing a podcast called no straight answers, and it's like a gay hockey podcast, and I am definitely I haven't listened to it yet. I'm going to subscribe, and I'm really curious to see what Zoe has, because I know she's had other hockey players on there was recently an NHL player who has come out and who's on her podcast. I don't know if it's like minor league. And I don't understand how hockey miners works, but anyway, check out. Zoe Boyd's no straight answers. Also, very good title. Absolutely, you're gonna have

Patti 55:08
to report back to the class if there's a lot of nice, heated rivalry references and signage at the at the pwhl game, I'm so excited that you're gonna go, you're gonna have fun. Oh my god. Two weeks. Two weeks. So much fun. All right, hey, so we have this crazy fantasy league, and wicked awesome remains on top. Is he gonna be hard to live with? He's gonna have to

Pottymouth 55:28
thank me a lot for taking the pictures.

Patti 55:33
Saying that quite a bit. I will say that. So yeah, he's he's leading by quite a bit. Bono's boyfriends dropped to number four, which allowed Karen's crew and all stars to jump to a second place tie, wow, which is pretty exciting.
