Tiny Cups of Tequila

Patti 0:17
Hi and welcome to episode 470 of No Crying in Baseball. The I'm Very Fast Episode. My name is Patti. I'm here with my friend Pottymouth. Hi, Pottymouth.

Pottymouth 0:26
You sound so sad.

Patti 0:28
I'm devastated.

Pottymouth 0:30
I'm I'm surprised that the very fast didn't get changed to very sad, very devastated. Yeah, crushed.

Patti 0:36
Very close to having a shot of tequila, which you put in front of me just in case I need

Pottymouth 0:40
it. Right, right. I figured we needed some emergency backup tequila today because here we are, 530 5p.m. I feel like we do need to do some like clicking and and reloading and make sure nothing. Yeah, we're recording on

Patti 0:51
Monday, which is the trade deadline, which means you know, two and a half hours ago, I found I learned that my very favorite baseball player in the whole world got traded away from the Orioles, and so I'm devastated about that. And it was really hard to work the rest of the day, but I managed, ish. So we got more to say about that. But yeah, so

Pottymouth 1:06
much more,

Patti 1:07
so so much more about that, and many other things. But you're back. I missed you.

Pottymouth 1:12
Yeah. So I was in the north. Maine has lovely weather. I mean, talk a bit. Let's just to sort of like lighten the load off of our very like weighted down shoulders at this point, Maine was such a lovely getaway. The air was clean. It was cool in the evenings. the The weather during the day was great. I have so many beautiful like oceanside pictures, and I also have a new phrase for those of you who are really tired of the Pakan Havidyad thing. You know to emphasize the the lovely accent that we have in the Northeast. It was when we were in Bar Harbor, Bahaba, which sounds so much more normal, and we had to charge the car. So we charge the car in Bahaba much better than packing your car at Harvard Yard, right?

Patti 1:55
Yes.

Pottymouth 1:56
So charge your car in Bahaba, do it. There are charging stations in Bahaba. Bahaba is beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Then we went from there to Brooklyn, which has an I instead of a Y. So not that Brooklyn, exactly. So you're

Patti 2:09
still in Maine.

Pottymouth 2:10
Still in Maine, lovely. And then from there, Portland, the land of the breweries. We saw the Sea Dogs. It tried to rain on our parade, but they did not let up. The game went on as planned, the only problem was their pregame. It was '80s night, so their pregame entertainment was, of course, a band called Girls Just Want to Have Fun, which I was very excited to see. Right, but they had the stage outside of the gate to the to the ballpark. So once you got into the ballpark, you couldn't see the band, and the problem was right when we got there at doors open, there was a downpour, and outside by the stage there was no roof. Despite the fact that on the side of the stage, the stage was sponsored by a roofing company. No, I swear to God, I will post that picture. And the stage had no roof, and there was no roof for anybody else to like stand by the stage. So we went into the ballpark and got the best veggie burgers I have ever had in any ballpark. I swear to God, I bet

Patti 3:10
Maine's good for that.

Pottymouth 3:11
Yeah, yeah, and it was from I think Veggie Life. We went there for lunch the the next day because it was so it worked so so good absolutely. So we heard girls would just want to have fun from the inside, but the the sea dogs cooperated. They started off miserable, and we thought, okay, well, we're here just to have fun, like those girls. But they managed to walk it off for us, so that was super exciting. And I was really excited to see username John Fran Garcia, which is Justinson's little brother.

Patti 3:43
Oh, right.

Pottymouth 3:44
And they had been playing together there, and Joann Fran is doing really well. He currently has a 294 average, 825 OPS, and we saw him throw out two guys who were who were trying to steal second base, and his throws, I mean, on target, amazing. So at that point, I was thinking this is the answer to the Red Sox catching issues, but but but no, unfortunately not. Yeah, I do feel a little bit, you know, like okay, they've got Joanne Fran as like a long term. I don't know, maybe someday he'll be coming up, but more on that soon. And then we we drank a shit ton of beer. Portland has so many breweries. We passed several, and we made it through six. And I thought that was pretty damn impressive for 50 somethings, almost 60 something. And it was so nice

Patti 4:35
of you to actually bring me a little some a beer as souvenir because you also left me your car for the week with the instruction that I should practice because this is the car we're taking on the epic road trip, which is very soon, and so it's a lot of fun. So I have to practice things like oh I don't know, highway driving, parking lots. So yeah, IKEA, Trader Joe's, you know those things happened, and then you know getting gas. Wow, that's expensive. Yeah, are these trips going to cost so much money? So what do you think is going to cost more? All the lodging or the gas?

Pottymouth 5:06
I probably the gas, depending on what happens in politics now, which I am. Yeah, I don't know. On happier notes, though, we are drinking one of the beers from Portland. This is from Austin Street Brewery. Highly recommend. It is a smoked porter. I don't remember the actual name of the beer, but it is so

Patti 5:24
delicious, smoked brown something. But it was so very good, and I like it. Oh right, right. It's smoked brown. Smoke brown, yeah. And um, I'm almost done with it because I'm a little drinky today.

Pottymouth 5:34
Yeah. Well, we've got plenty of backup beer. Plenty of backup. Only,

Patti 5:38
if only. Oh my gosh. All right, on today's show, boyfriends featuring big freaking trades, fast, flexible ultimates, and espresso. We've got a scooter-related police blotter. The WPBL is here and here. We're cross-training with the WNBA, and there's a White Sox treat that I want so very much. Cheers. I'm opening my backup beer.

Pottymouth 6:03
All right, and and the backup beer. These are this is fun. This is the Sam Adams 12 pack of the Boston Sports Legends, and we went for hockey and football today because I drank baseball last week. That was the Garrett Crochet Pale Ale. Mister Potty Mouth tried the Derek White ale, and then now you're drinking the Zedeno Chara Pilsner, I believe. Pilsner, it's a Pilsner. I'm going to be having the Julian Edelman Laga in just a brief moment. So cheers to Boston Sports. Yeah, yeah. It'll be

Patti 6:39
fine. It's all going to be fine. All right, hey, you get to go first.

Pottymouth 6:43
Sure. So I'm going to talk about some less controversial baseball boyfriends. These are all the guys that we pick in the off season because they're oh so cool. We each picked one guy per team, and then we made our fantasy leagues out of a lot of those guys, and so we're keeping up on them, see how they're doing. And I like to look sometimes at my guys who are doing well because there are just a few of them. Sal Stewart. It's a short list. No, it is. It really is. Sal Stewart of Cincinnati. He's doing so

Patti 7:09
good. What

Pottymouth 7:10
a guy! What a guy. He is currently tied with C.J. Abrams for which is also pretty cool. C.J. is a former pick of mine for leading for RBI in all of Major League Baseball with 85, and again we're we're recording pre Monday night games, but 85 is a lot of RBI. And Sal and CJ, like two great guys. Yeah, Sal got a lot of them in this past weekend. He had a big TGIF Friday with four of those RBIs in one game, including a go-ahead two-run home run in the fourth off of none other than Paul Skeens, and Cincinnati playing Pittsburgh is a thing. He also got the game-tying two-run single in the eighth, and Cincinnati pulled it off and won eight to seven over Pittsburgh. Now, just side note, I love and admire both teams. Neither one is my hometown team. I love appreciating, you know, the the Cincinnati Pittsburgh thing because it's fun to watch. There, he then on Sunday he was back at it with a home run in the bottom of the first that just set the tone because that win was much more dominant, 10 to two over Pittsburgh in his last eight games, this young man has a 319 average and a 1.055 OPS. So as I was looking at stuff on Friday, I was like checking out baseball in low moments in Maine. Yeah, stuff when we when there wasn't much action going on. And on Friday night, Wilson Contreras, former baseball boyfriend of mine, who I'm going to talk about more in the former section, got hit hit by a pitch in the head, which is always really yucky to watch. Yeah, super scary. It's against the Dodgers, their pitcher Will Klein on Friday, and you know we talked about this, or I mentioned it maybe last week that Wilson Contreras has the tendency to to you know get close to the plate. He

Patti 9:04
really does. He really does. So

Pottymouth 9:06
he's kind of I mean I don't want to say asking for it, but it's a risk you're taking. You know he's

Patti 9:11
choosing to crowd

Pottymouth 9:12
exactly.

Patti 9:12
Yeah, he's

Pottymouth 9:13
crowding him. Doesn't

Patti 9:13
mean it's good to get hit, but he is choosing to stand where he's standing.

Pottymouth 9:17
So I thought you know with a guy like this he must be leading in hit by pitch, and so I looked it up, and Contreras is not leading by far. The guy who is by far is my St. Louis pick, Ivan Herrera.

Patti 9:31
Really,

Pottymouth 9:31
and I had not heard about this, and apparently this is a big deal. So at the time of recording, Wilson Contreras is tied with Sam Antonacci for second place with 19, and Yvonne Herrera has 25. The Cardinals' season record is 31. Is he trying to beat that against or something? I mean, that's not the record you want to go for. So there was one article that I read where he was literally showing the interviewer his bruises. So because the interviewer no. Noticed the big bruise on his arm, and he's like, "Well, check this one out, and basically dropped his drawers to show him the butt one on his butt, which was much worse apparently. So he just is used to being bruised. I don't think he's trying. So then I looked into it more, like, like, does he crowd the plate? Apparently, he doesn't at all. He does, however, had have the third most open stance, so he's sort of like facing the pitcher, but he's not close to the plate. But what they're sort of concluding is that when he turns in to actually go after the ball, he's bringing that front leg and front side of his body more toward the plate and becoming, but he's still not entering the strike zone, so it's still the pitcher, you know, going inside. Probably a

Patti 10:47
weirder target because of how he's standing too. Interesting. Yeah,

Pottymouth 10:51
and maybe the pitcher is more comfortable going inside because he's not there, and then all of a sudden he is there. I don't know. He does have a long way to go before the MOB record overall, which was set in 1896. They didn't throw as hard then as a thing. When Huey Jennings got hit 51 times, he was an Orioles player in 1896. The modern day record is actually number two. Ron Hunt had 50 in 1971 when he was playing with the Expos. So I'm hoping that Herrera can set some records besides this hit by a pitch thing. He was the hero of last Wednesday's extra innings win over the Cubs, which is a big thing in St. Louis. They had nine scoreless innings, and then Pete Crow Armstrong hit a two-round two-run home run in the top of the 10th. You know, folks thought maybe that's it, and then in the bottom of the 10th, all hell broke loose, starting with Lars Noopbar getting a single, and they had you know the the whatever Manford Man runner as Craig Calsatera calls him, who was on second move to third. There's a walk, there's a sack, and Herrera came to hit the two run walk off double to win the game, so I'm happy with my guy Herrera. Except for I just think he needs a little padding, maybe a little bit of padding. Yeah. So those are my good guys. Actually, I have one more good guy. I'm gonna bump him up here because he's another good Nassim Nunez, who I just can't talk enough about. Because he just keeps stealing bases. He's just he's like I don't know Klepto or nabbing those bases, Nasim. He has 40 fucking stolen bases this season. That seems like a lot. It is a lot. It's 10 more than the second place votes. Oh, that's quite a lot. Which is Jazz Chisholm and Bobby Witt Jr. who are tied for 30. And then there are four. And then there's a whole cluster. There's four more who are tied at 27, so it's a lot. And weirdly, his pace slowed down like crazy in July. He only had nine steals in the month of July, and every other month was, except for March, of course, was double digits. But he already has two in August as of yesterday. I'm gonna click over and see if he. No, he's still at 40, and so that's where he's at, and now I gotta find my window again because I don't know how this thing works. There it is. All right. So now for my broken guys, I picked two players for my bench because they're so versatile, and I thought I had this thing covered for our fantasy league because between these two guys, they covered every position except for catcher, and I thought if I keep these guys on the bench, no matter who is out or not playing, I can basically sub them in like these two guys and a catcher. Well, I talked about Blaze Alexander before, you know, one of our favorites from the O's, who is good for second base, third base, shorts, and the outfield, and he's been out since july 12 when he got hit on the left hand, and because his fracture is non-displaced, hopefully he will be coming back, but probably not until the end of August, maybe beginning of September. Then my other flexible guy broke this week, and that's Casey Schmidt, who's been above and beyond utility because he's been subbing in, and when he subs in, he's been super solid. His average is 271 within 784 OPS. And the first report, I just you know I feel like I'm learning to be a little bit of a medical ex not expert, not even close. I can read medical stuff, maybe. I don't understand something. That's the words. Yeah, that, and I don't even think I can because he underwent a debridement of his lateral meniscus on Friday, and I was at all

Patti 14:28
those words.

Pottymouth 14:29
There, all right. I feel

Patti 14:29
like you did.

Pottymouth 14:30
I knew that meniscus is a knee, and so yes, he had a meniscus tear on his knee. He rounded first base, and actually, I don't know if I put in the right link, but looking at his legs, they both go like wobbly. I'm surprised it was just one knee. He just looks kind of like knock kneed on his way back to first base. So he had a hit. That was the last hit that he's gonna have for a while. He's out at least six to eight weeks, and you know the Giants aren't going far, and they just did some major. Offloading, so they might just let him rest up till next year. You know why push it? He is very utility. He had been filling in for Matt Chapman at third. He was out with an abdominal strain, but he seems to be coming back any day now. And I was thinking, you know, if only the Giants had another strong third base. Oh wait, they moved him to first base, and I don't know. That's Raphael Devers, who I have mixed feelings about, to say the least. Oh, I just got an alert just now saying Casey Schmidt is injured and in your starting lineup. Maybe I need to do that. Oh man, you're going for the tequila. It is tequila time. I wish I had a

Patti 15:34
sip.

Pottymouth 15:34
I wish I had a sombrero. So this is when we went to Brooklyn. It was like you know middle of nowhere Maine. We went to one of like three restaurants in the area, and it was a Mexican restaurant in a barn, and it was called LL Fricoles, which is LL Bean. Yeah, no,

Patti 15:51
I get that. That's pretty funny.

Pottymouth 15:52
And we're waiting in line, and I'm thinking, well, this is obviously a good place because the line is crazy. And somebody runs out with a big ass hat, which is what I wish I had for you because it would be perfect right now. Big sombrero, well decorated. Gave it to the last person in line, and they said nobody can come after you. We're running out of food, and they have this system that when they get close to running out of food, they put out the sombrero so that when you're driving up, you see this big ass sombrero in line, and you know ah, no more food. So

Patti 16:19
if you put that on my head, does that mean I only get the one, one tiny little teacup of tequila, and because you're running out?

Pottymouth 16:26
I think we are not even close to running out of tequila. You can have as much tequila as you would like. You have a ride home. I

Patti 16:32
mean, it looks like it's very nice tequila, and I don't want to shoot it. I'm just gonna like sip it out of the crazy little teacup.

Pottymouth 16:37
Yeah, these are the magic teacups. Yeah, do we do we

Patti 16:40
need a photo of me with a tiny little teacup? Because it's not such a rare thing.

Pottymouth 16:43
I will do this. All right, bringing out the camera. Because this is what our listeners

Patti 16:47
want to hear. They want to hear a picture being taken of me with a tiny teacup of tequila.

Pottymouth 16:51
Right, right. I'm I'm stationing the the bottle and the my microphone's in the way, but I got to talk into that. All right, this is good enough. Okay, you can smile.

Patti 17:00
Can I though? I'm smiling through the tears. Maybe you can. All right. That's very tasty.

Pottymouth 17:08
I'm going to join you because I just fit. It goes with smoky, so I just finished. It really. Oh wow.

Patti 17:13
Oh, I feel that all the way down. That is very nice.

Pottymouth 17:15
Here we go. We're going to be just. And I just. I just want to like if if it's not

Patti 17:20
clear to listeners. I'm not normally the one who does the shots. I periodically will do a shot, but Potty Mouth is always like, "Hey, let's do a shot. I'm like, "No, yeah, and this is just that day.

Pottymouth 17:30
Wait till you see my suitcase for the road trip. No, just kidding. Like,

Patti 17:34
okay,

Pottymouth 17:35
thinking I'll throw a bottle or two in there

Patti 17:37
because why

Pottymouth 17:37
not? All right. So why are you so stressed?

Patti 17:42
I'm I'm not stressed. I'm despondent.

Pottymouth 17:45
Okay.

Patti 17:45
I'm depressed. I was great until like 3o'clock today when I got the Adly Richmond has been traded to the Red Sox. Adley is my once and forever boyfriend. I picked him years ago, and he was the guy that I repeated every year because he's just my guy. I have this thing for Adley, he's just a good human. You know, he's good at his job. He's just that guy. He's

Pottymouth 18:07
a hugger. He's

Patti 18:09
he's a hugger. And okay, so here's the thing that I just realized. I also feel bad about.

Speaker 1 18:14
No,

Patti 18:14
a lot of the stories about the trades are when did guys find out about the trades, and a lot of found out like mid game. The Orioles have a day off today, so he wasn't with his people. Oh, the hugger didn't have anybody to hug. I mean, I don't know. I don't know where. I don't know where he was. I don't know what happened. But it's not like you are in the dugout with your people, and they're like, "Oh my God, you're leaving! I will miss you. Yeah, and you have that moment. So I don't know what's going to happen, but um, yeah. So I found out today, as you all did, that Adley Richmond, my guy, is being traded to the Red Sox. Right, I know, I know. And if he

Pottymouth 18:49
had to go somewhere, at least I get to be really happy when he does well too. I can join you in the in the Adley love. I'm not feeling that great about this trade, to tell you the truth either. But I'm trying to learn on the bright side. I know, I know, and I

Patti 19:02
don't know. I mean, and and I, I told, I told you guys before. I told the potty mouse. It's not that it's the Red Sox. It's that Adley is leaving. It might be a little bit that it's the Red Sox, but mostly it's that Adley is leaving.

Pottymouth 19:11
Well, it's not just that it's the Red Sox, and you have to look at it whenever you come over in this house wall to wall. But it's the AL East, so like they're competing against his team, which is seems pretty fucked up to me, honestly.

Patti 19:23
Right, right, and like you know, coming into today, I think that the the the O's were like a game and a half or two games out of the wild card. They were, I mean, they haven't been doing great, but they were hanging on to like within reach, and all of a sudden they're in sell mode. Right. So I'm a little disturbed about that. But my question is, did the O's get a better deal than Detroit did for Scoople? Because they certainly they certainly got more guys.

Pottymouth 19:49
I think so. I think so. And this just in from our good friend and listener Brian, who says, "Quote: The top prospect the Sox gave up was Anthony Iinson, right-handed pitcher." Other half of the best one-two punch in the country for the 2025 LSU Championship team with number three pick Kate Anderson. So you've got a strong pitcher there. You've got Carlos Navajos, who I know that's you know one of the current Red Sox catchers. This makes me sad because it breaks up that Venezuelan sort of like brotherhood that was going on there. We no longer have those five, and he has not been performing well lately. But he has had wonderful moments, and he does seem like a really good guy and somebody who has good relationships with the pitchers. So I'm I'm very sad to lose Carlos Novaez. I mean,

Patti 20:37
I I want good guys. I I really want good catchers because we've been playing without the top two catchers for a couple of weeks now, and it showed, which is unfortunate. But yeah, it was weird to get this news, and then they have other people like text me with the news, and I'm sitting there at work among people who wouldn't get it if I talked about it. The people who would get it were the ones who texted me, who weren't in the office and all of that. I'm like, kind of want to go throw up. I kind of want to cry. I kind of want to do things that aren't my job, but I can't do any of the stuff. So thank you for being with me, and um, and thank you, Pottyma, for supplying tequila and beer, um, and understanding because you know what it's like to lose a guy that you really care about from your team to somewhere else. So I'm gonna move on and talk about Terek Scoopel.

Pottymouth 21:20
Oh, we're gonna move on. We that's that's the attitude. You got to just move on to the next guy. It's gonna. We're. You are so

Patti 21:29
convincing. Yeah, I'm there. I'm over the whole thing.

Pottymouth 21:31
Right. All right. In no way whatsoever. Oh, you know what? I mean, this sort of sucks for our road trip. I'm sorry to like pile it on, but we're we're ending our road trip with two Orioles games at St. Louis, we are, and sad.

Patti 21:43
Yes, yes, indeed, yes, indeed. And there's no chance of seeing Schuylkill in Detroit when we're there either. So at this point, it's probably just going to rain. But no, oh, knock on everything. Wait, you knock because you-that's the better one. Yes, this is

Pottymouth 21:56
the magic table. Actually, we have now ascertained that knocking on this table does good. All back a couple podcasts. All right. So

Patti 22:03
until 3o'clock today, the biggest big news of the trade deadline was Terek Skull, who was traded to the frigging Dodgers for three prospects. And so to put this in perspective, he's basically a two month rental because he's gonna be a free agent as soon as the season is over, so the the the team that got him, no matter who it would be, would be on the hook for the rest of his his contract for those two wins, which is $9 million. Because if you remember when it came to arbitration, the the Tigers offered him like 19 million, and he said, "I'm worth 32, and so the the the arbiters said, yeah, you're right, you're worth 32. So we have this huge thing in arbitration, this huge salary. But a lot of teams, almost every team could afford that.

Pottymouth 22:50
Yeah,

Patti 22:50
$9 million is a lot to humans, but it's not a lot to baseball teams. Yeah. So if you really wanted to upgrade your pitching, you could do it. Milwaukee could do it. The Rays could do it, and they didn't do it. And the Dodgers gave away three prospects, and their farm team is so deep. These weren't anywhere near their top guys. That's crazy. They were like top 100 guys, but they weren't near the top guys on LA's list. And so what happened was, the Dodgers said, "Fuck it, we want this guy, and let's see how little we can give up. Yeah, and that worked, and it's still a good haul for Detroit. It really is a good haul for Detroit. They got rid of some salary. They got three guys who will be just fine for them, and they're young enough that they'll have them for a long time. They'll have a chance to develop, but but it's not

Pottymouth 23:37
enteric school teams

Patti 23:39
like Milwaukee and the race were didn't want to give up their top prospects, so they made that choice. But they could have, but they chose not to. So part of me is with the whole evil empire. Here we go. You know, of course you want it. You went out and got it, and so whatever. And part of me is like, okay, you smaller market teams, you could have done this. Yeah, it did not cost LA that much.

Pottymouth 24:05
You know, mr. Potty Mouse' immediate reaction. He turned to me and he's like, "I wonder if the owners were in cahoots for this just to get a salary cap, just to sort of like say.

Patti 24:17
So what's interesting about that is that's it's absolutely going to be used for salary cap talks. Yeah, but if you look at the playoff races right now, there are a boatload of teams that are from small or moderate size markets that are in contention for playoff spots.

Pottymouth 24:32
I hope they get it.

Patti 24:33
So, so it it's not a sure thing. And frankly, if you remember, Dodgers pitchers get hurt a lot. Where I had them as a pitching flock a couple years ago, and all my guys got hurt. Yeah, and so they're loaded for bear right now. I mean, they've got a million really good starting pitchers, but anything could happen.

Pottymouth 24:53
Well, yeah, because Ohtani's not pitching right now.

Patti 24:55
Ohtani's not pitching. They've got a bunch of guys who would like fill out. What did I read? Their starting pitcher salaries combined is like the 16th highest payroll in all of baseball. Like it's, it's 16th compared to all the other teams, and it's just for the pitchers. So there's that. But there are a lot of low and moderate market teams, small and moderate market teams that are absolutely in contention right now. If you're willing to pay attention to that to like combat the whole salary cap thing, but absolutely it's going to be used for the salary. And also, I was like, okay, well, it's all over. Clearly, the the the Digers are winning their thing. No,

Pottymouth 25:35
I don't think they're going to win

Patti 25:37
it. I I don't think it's over. Please knock on that table again. Just one more time. Knock

Pottymouth 25:41
and knock and knock. Yeah. Okay. They're gonna win. So they so they've got

Patti 25:43
this you know embarrassment of pitching riches, but again the IL is totally real. So here's one of the other stories. Like so Scouble was found out what a horrible place to find out. There Detroit was playing in Sacramento, so he's like in a minor league field, and he gets this news that he's going to a place he doesn't want to leave the Tigers. He's being sent to L.A. which I mean, like there's many more possibilities there for him, which is true. But the Tigers are all he's known. He was drafted by the Tigers. He's been with them for nine freaking years. He is not happy about this. He was near tears. Here's what he said. He said, "I'm very appreciative of all the things the Tigers did for me: drafting me in 2018, giving a kid a chance out of a small school, and giving me every resource to use. That's something I'll never take for granted. It's tough. I love all those guys in there. They're some of my best friends.

Pottymouth 26:35
He was totally tearing up too. I saw that. It was super, super emotional, and that's the the thing too that I've seen like a couple times this idea of of they believed in me when nobody knew me, you know, yeah, like that to have a little bit of allegiance and respect and appreciation for a team that did that is that's fantastic. I am not

Patti 26:56
mad at the Dodgers. I'm mad at the other teams who didn't suck it up and go for

Pottymouth 27:00
it. Right. I can't believe there wasn't more of a. All right, I'm opening my beer too.

Patti 27:04
Yep, yep. All right, on to other things. So, all right, my Toronto guy Kazuma Okamoto, he had his. Okay, so you've got a guy with 40 stolen bases.

Speaker 2 27:14
Yeah,

Patti 27:14
Okamoto had his very first stolen base. Oh, hey, as a major league player last Monday versus the Nationals.

Pottymouth 27:21
There's nothing like your first time.

Patti 27:23
His manager John Schneider said he has to work on his sliding a bit. It's tough to stop those calves when he's going past, but that was pretty good. And of course, Kaz, in his very like you know sort of like monotone way, said, "I'm very fast, which is very funny. If you watch the clip of his deal, it's a terrible steal, like like he just like sort of got there and like landed on his body. It's very sweet. But Tuesday in Washington, he hit his 24th home run, which ties the Blue Jays' season record for a rookie. So again, you know, it's it's so weird to call him a rookie because he played for years in Japan, but he's a rookie as far as MLB is concerned.

Pottymouth 28:00
All right,

Patti 28:00
and so he's doing his thing right there. Also in Washington, my guy Dalen Lyle.

Pottymouth 28:04
Oh, doing great things. Okay,

Patti 28:05
this one you're gonna be amused. I'm hoping you're with me on this. Okay, all right. So he changed his walk-up song. He's 23. The story about him changing his walk-up song talked about him being a fan of throwback music, which because he's 23, you know, this part is okay, okay. Because he's 23, he went from a 1995 Mariah Carey song to a 1997 Mays. You know, feels so good. So for him, that's throwbacks. That that makes sense. That brought new music for me. But where I started to get ticked was they talked about his inspiration. Okay. Apparently, Sunday batting cages time, he and James would play what they call an old school R and B playlist. When you hear old school R and B, like I think of Marvin Gaye,

Pottymouth 28:46
yeah,

Patti 28:47
I think of Aretha, I think of Stevie Wonder. They're talking about these things. They're talking about Mariah Carey and Mays as this. I said, oh yeah. So I heard I heard this Mays song on this old school R and b1. No, no, no! What the fricking hell! So, okay, I know we're old and all, but old school R and B means something. It doesn't mean this.

Pottymouth 29:07
There's question number one for James Wood's mom. Whenever we get to talk to her, like, what music do you listen to? What do you consider old school R and B?

Patti 29:14
Absolutely. So, whether it's the new walk-up song or not, on Thursday he had a two home run game and lost to Atlanta, which is his third multi home run game this season. So yay for you! And the song is fine. He talks about he wants to like you know get get a vibe happening in the ballpark. That's all great. It's just that it's not old school, buddy. It's throwback for you personally, but it's not old school. Let me talk about my espresso boys. These are two of my boyfriends that were on the on Team Italy, Jack Caglione from Kansas City, had a two run homer on Thursday versus Minnesota. Great, he only went one for five on Saturday versus Colorado, but the one was a two run homer, and that was his 18th of the year, and that was the first of a back to back series. Salvi got the. Home run right after him, which is whenever you do something with Salvi, that's kind of a nice thing, right? My other espresso boy is my Seattle boyfriend Dominic Kenzone, who had a three-run home run last Sunday over Texas, which helped Seattle break their losing streak of four games in a row, which is great. So he, so Dominic called it like you know a step in the right direction, and he kept going in that right direction because on Tuesday he went two for four with two homers and three RBI when they beat the Dodgers. So yay seven to six, and that those were his 17th and his 18th home runs, which leads Seattle in homers. That's the most on the team. So a quick little here's your stat for the day: WRC plus is weighted runs created plus. This is a stat that takes your whole offensive value together. Like singles are worth something, doubles are worth something else, triples. It's not just like it's a hit. It's it's like no, no. They're very specific scoring depending on like it's a walk, whatever, and it also adjusts for the ballpark where it happens because you hear there's hitters parks, there's pitchers parks, there's you know a short porch over here. There's you know there's the the great well of Baltimore and the old whatever. So this stat adjusts for those things. So over two years, he's only one of six players to have a WRC plus a weighted runs created plus score of 140 or greater among qualified hitters, which is like 240 at bats or more. The other guys are Nick Kurtz, Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, and Kyle Schwarber.

Pottymouth 31:25
They hit balls far. They

Patti 31:27
do. And would you would you guess that Dominic Kenzo was one of those guys? No. So that's pretty cool. So yay for you, espresso boys.

Pottymouth 31:34
Yeah. All right. Yeah. Seattle not living up to what we thought they would be doing this year. I just wanted to check back in on Wilson Contreras. Now that we're in the former baseball boyfriends section, these are the guys that we've picked in past years. We only keep one guy over from from one year to the next, so we let these guys go, but do not forget about them. He was hit in the head, but he only missed one game because of it. He was on a day to day concussion protocol on Saturday, but apparently he was joking around in the dugout doing fine, and he was back in the lineup Sunday at the Dodgers. By the way, speaking of that that Scoubel trade, the thing that I felt the most relieved about is that the the Red Sox had just finished their series with the Dodgers and swept them in L.A. which is all sorts of yay before got there, so hooray for that! But by the way, so Wilson not only is tied for second in hit by a pitch, but if you look at the guys who get hit by a pitch a lot, they aren't producing as much as Wilson is. He's also number three in OPS in all of MLB behind Juan Soto, but ahead of Shohei Ohtani, Jordan Alvarez is doing all sorts of crazy things, and he is number one. And the reason why Houston is doing as well as it is. So you mentioned like the the first time or the unusual kind of event, and I and Salvador Perez, and I just want to point out. Oh, you're refilling your time. I only I'm only doing

Patti 33:01
a one finger. I'm only doing one finger in the tiny teacup. I'm not doing a full shot.

Pottymouth 33:05
Totally fine. It's really yummy. It's I might be doing that as well. Salvador Perez, Kansas City Royals. Um, last week I mentioned my one of my apparently nationals boyfriends, and and mind you, you can only have one guy per team. Jorbit Vivas came over from the Yankees, so I don't have him on my roster anymore. But keeping track of him, and he had his first triple last week of his career, which is all of two years. Salvador Perez says, "Hold my beer, and if you have not seen the video on this, you must go right to the show notes on Wednesday, july 29, versus the Twins. Salvador Perez got a lead off. 36 year old Salvador Perez got a lead off triple in the fourth inning. Whoa! And the chugging, the just the absolute chugging around the bases is amazing. And face plants slide into third, and then the best shot is the final shot in the sequence where his face is in the dirt. He turns to the side, and there's that salvy smile, gorgeous. And this is after that you know big home run thing that we talked about last week. It was a fastball out of the zone. It was above the zone. He hit it, and then he ended up scoring afterwards on a sacrifice fly. The Royals won four to nothing. We are

Patti 34:22
gonna love those Kansas City games. I am. I think we're gonna have a really good time there.

Pottymouth 34:26
I yeah. I'm gonna be. I should make like I love you, Salvi, some something cute about Salvi because oh my god, especially going to two games, we're bound to see him. Um, last actually one of the last. I have a couple add-ons because the trade deadline, the ultimate Clemens this past week in Minnesota got the revenge. So that that salvy triple was against the Twins, and then Cody Clemens and the rest of the Minnesota team got their revenge the next night, Thursday the 30th, winning four to three. But they were no hit for the first six innings, and then two more with no runs scored. Noah Cameron went 97 pitches without any runs, and then they pulled him. This is Kansas City closer Lucas Ursig, yeah, got two outs, and then all hell broke loose. He hit the next guy with a pitch. Royce Lewis got a single after being on an o2 count. Hit that single. Josh Bell, who like I'm always amused where he's popping up, walked after being on an o2 count. So like the the pitcher here is doing the best that he can, and then the bases are suddenly loaded, so they pull their closer and put in Matt Strom, who's been all over the place like so many teams, and Cody Clemens comes up and gets an ultimate grand slam again on an o2 count. Tell them what

Patti 35:59
an ultimate grand slam is. An

Pottymouth 36:00
ultimate grand slam is quote when a batter hits a walk-off grand slam with his team trailing by three runs, which is what they were doing. And apparently, this is the 34th ultimate grand slam in history, but the only one that was hit after six innings of a no hitter. Wow! It is the 15th ultimate grand slam on two outs. So all of that noise, everything happened on two outs. So their closer got two outs, one out away from winning the game, and all hell brokes breaks loose. So Sarah Lang, of course, is the the queen on getting all of this, and Cody Clemens also was o2 in the count, so all of this was one strike away. Which you know, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades and nuclear weapons. Trade deadline, quick. A couple of my former baseball boy friends have been moving. Luis Garcia Jr. will be sad not to see him here in Washington, especially because he's going to the fucking Yankees. Although the Nationals got four right-handed pitchers, I don't know why all four righties, but they got four right-handed pitchers. The Nationals need pitching. Connolly early, I'm hoping, is going to be pitching soon, but you know he still has to do some rehab, and I'm really, really hoping you're checking the trade deadline. They didn't trade C.J. Ibs, did they? You're no, but Foster

Patti 37:22
Foster Griffin just went to the Guardians.

Pottymouth 37:24
No.

Speaker 3 37:25
Yes. Oh

Pottymouth 37:26
my God! There goes National Spider

Patti 37:28
Leaguers back to the Nats.

Pottymouth 37:31
Fucking a Nats. You know, I really thought this meant you guys were going for it, but oh well. Their best pitcher. Well, early in Griffin out. Holy shit!

Patti 37:40
It's a heck of a of a trade deadline, man. Oh,

Pottymouth 37:43
ouch! All right, last trade deadline. Kevin Gossman. I just wanted to mention I picked him way back in 2023 with Toronto. There's fond memories of him because he started his career here in Baltimore, and I have a T-shirt thanks to our friend Brian of his his LSU days. So this puts he's going to the Cubs from Toronto.

Patti 38:02
Oh, this

Pottymouth 38:03
puts me in a conundrum for what to wear. So as we're packing, we have to think about what we're wearing at each ballpark. And I had my Cubs minor league beer in baseball that I got at the Smokies. Sure, that I was all set up.

Patti 38:16
Are we going to one game or two? Yes.

Pottymouth 38:18
So there's the question. We got to get. Now we have to go to two because

Patti 38:20
you have two shirts.

Pottymouth 38:21
Yes. Oh, there we go. That put us over. Solved. We got to get the second game. Yeah.

Patti 38:25
I only have one shirt though, so only you can go the second game. Okay. I have my Ian Happ makes me coffee shirt.

Pottymouth 38:30
Yeah, but then there's we also have some generic like beautiful night for baseball. No, sure. Yeah, I mean podcaster. Yeah. Or you know then there's also the team store that you can go to the first night. My dad actually that is his one request. His Cub shirt is so worn out. He has a Cub shirt. He has a Cub shirt because he went there. He went to Really. So, like, of course, yeah. So he wants a new one. All

Patti 38:49
right,

Pottymouth 38:49
that's that's all right. I

Patti 38:51
feel good about that. Yep. Wow.

Pottymouth 38:54
Oh my God. I am disappointed in you, Nationals. More disappointed than the Red Sox. But I'm I'm gonna get a. I'm with you. I thought they were

Patti 39:01
going for

Pottymouth 39:02
it. Fuck. Well, I think they're

Patti 39:05
going for it with bats, so not anything else. Hey, I have a story that will amuse you. You want to be amused?

Pottymouth 39:10
Yes, and I actually love this story, and I'm so glad you're telling it.

Patti 39:14
So Harrison Bader was my Yankees boyfriend in 23. He's been with a lot, a lot of teams. It made me very happy when he was with the Yankees because I got to pick him because he's so not a Yankee kind of guy. But he's a

Pottymouth 39:25
goofy dude. But

Patti 39:25
he's you know like from New York, so that was kind of a nice place for him to go. Anyway, so Harrison Bader technically is under a two-year contract with the Giants. He hasn't played since May. He's been on the IL for plantar fasciitis.

Pottymouth 39:38
So I had plantar fasciitis once, and I think it's fascinating that he's been in the IL that long with it. I mean, it is a painful thing, but you know, you get a tennis ball and you do a little massage in your foot, and you're maybe doesn't taste how it works.

Patti 39:50
I don't know. I don't. I can't speak to that. What I can speak to is last week Sunday, allegedly because it's being investigated, but allegedly around two a.m. In the Marina District, or Cow Hollow, depending on who's telling the story, in San Francisco, which is basically where the bars are, which is important to the story. He, they say he drove, which makes me think it's an electric scooter, although it never said right electric scooter. Drove a scooter into the back of a a fire engine. They're hard to spot. They're not large and red or anything.

Pottymouth 40:25
Yeah, so even better if it had its lights. But

Patti 40:28
also, apparently, somehow the wheel of the fire engine ran over his foot. Those are heavy as well as apparently invisible. So the

Pottymouth 40:36
way the wheel of the fire engine ran over his foot-that

Patti 40:39
is, the grammar in these stories has not been great, but that is what I believe to be true because apparently this was the same foot that he had the plantar fasciitis. That

Pottymouth 40:47
is so much worse than plantar fasciitis. Yes, and here's

Patti 40:50
where it gets, you know, crazy because of this, right? So he's already out because of plantar fasciitis, which you know is not really caused by baseball, I don't think, but maybe no, I got it. But but but that was fine for the Giants. They're like, yeah, you're on the IL. You're going to keep getting paid. You're you know you still work for us. You just can't play because you have this thing on your foot. Well, on Thursday, there the Giants manager Tony Battello announced that Bader's now out for the season, and then said his coming back was a long shot because of the recovery time for the plantar fasciitis, so he was implying that he probably wouldn't have been back anyway. You're, you know, you're like get a tennis ball, whatever. But anyhow, I

Pottymouth 41:28
can't believe it takes that long.

Patti 41:30
But what the implication was supposed to be was he had his foot rolled, you know, on by a fire engine while driving a scooter near bars, two in the morning, so a lot of things. But but his manager's like, yeah, he probably wasn't going to come back anyway. On Friday, the team, and by the team I mean my former boyfriend Buster Posey, who I'm not so excited about anymore. Buster Posey, like I really liked a lot better as a catcher than I do as you know team management. So the team announced on Friday that's looking into the incident. This alleged driving a scooter into a fire truck near bars at two in the morning, Sunday morning, and they are quote suspending payment to Harrison until he's able to resume performing services for the club.

Pottymouth 42:20
Performing services does that mean like the the Starbucks run like it could be

Patti 42:25
anything I don't know on his

Pottymouth 42:27
scooter on his see maybe

Patti 42:29
okay so one of the things I read was like well you know in the contract you can't participate in sports that might be dangerous a scooter is transportation right it's multimodal transportation I do this for a living it is not a sport. Drunk driving. We don't know this.

Pottymouth 42:43
It's pretty. It's

Patti 42:45
pretty. It's incriminating, but that's still not a sport. Right. It's still not a sport. And his own manager is saying he might have been out for the season. I'm arguing it this way because he may have to file a grievance with the you know through the MLBPA saying you can't just randomly decide to stop paying me because I was out driving a scooter at two a.m.

Pottymouth 43:07
and there was no breathalyzer involved, right?

Patti 43:10
You you know you can't prove anything, but there's precedent. There's precedent.

Pottymouth 43:17
Yes, this is

Patti 43:18
not the first time that Bader has driven a scooter into a truck.

Pottymouth 43:22
That's like who does this

Patti 43:23
more than once? Who does this once? You

Pottymouth 43:25
would think you would learn.

Patti 43:26
Well, he was a freshman in college, and you don't learn anything as a freshman in college. He was suspended 19 games for driving a scooter into an f1 150. So much smaller. Yeah, but I guess when you're older, you don't see. So maybe like it was harder. I don't know. I I don't know. I guess

Pottymouth 43:45
we should be appreciative that he's using a scooter and not an automobile, right? So that you know, the only person that he's hurting apparently is himself.

Patti 43:53
And you know, I'm sure he didn't do this on purpose because ow! Can you imagine how much how painful that was? That's unless you really happened for

Pottymouth 44:00
ENI, which you know I

Patti 44:01
can talk to later because you know I've got tequila in front of me. Anyway, so yeah, scooter incident. So that was my crossover former boyfriend police bladder incident. But now I'm back to just former boyfriends, Lane Thomas, who I just adore, was my boyfriend from Washington in 2022. On Saturday, he was traded from Kansas City. Sorry, won't see you there either. To Atlanta with a minor league pitcher in return for two minor league pitchers, he left the game versus Colorado in the fourth inning. So there's another one of those like mid game. Okay, we've signed the bottom line. You you need to stop work.

Pottymouth 44:34
Yeah, and you're

Patti 44:35
out of here. He was playing center field for Kansas City, but for Atlanta, he's probably going to play left and probably going to platoon with Mike Yastrzemski, the manager for Atlanta's. Like you're not going to be an everyday guy. You were an everyday guy for Kansas City, but that's not what we need. We need somebody who's good against lefties and is good in the clubhouse. So. He's going to have probably a much reduced role with the Atlanta team than he had, so that's unfortunate for him. But that's what they needed. That's what they needed. I hope he does well because he just seems like a good guy, and he's played with a bunch of teams. He's been traded four times. Four times. He's not that old.

Pottymouth 45:19
Speaking of trades, I just refreshed. Now what? Now are you

Patti 45:23
gonna break my heart again?

Pottymouth 45:24
I'm breaking my heart.

Patti 45:26
Oh,

Pottymouth 45:26
Hiliat Ramos, who was my Giants guy, is going to the fucking Yankees. I hate it when that shit happens. Yeah, I just that's and then Marcela Meyer from the Red Sox, who you know no hard feelings because he barely played for us is going to the Giants for a pitcher. So I don't know. We have a lot of digesting to do, man. All right, sorry. Are you done with with Lane Thomas? I guess a lot of folks are done with Lane Thomas.

Patti 45:55
At least three other terms of teams have been finished with Lane Thomas, which is too bad. He

Pottymouth 46:00
does seem like a really nice guy.

Patti 46:01
He does seem like a nice guy, but what do we know? All right, let's start to

Pottymouth 46:04
to tie a bow on Curtis Mead, and actually, so last week I was sad about Connolly early leaving the Red Sox, and my stepmother was super sad about it. She really liked him, and I was just like, I will keep an eye on him. This is my B team. I'm gonna be watching them. And hey, we got that home run hitter that Dad has been saying we need a slugga. We need a slugga. We

Patti 46:28
need a

Pottymouth 46:28
slugga. And we got Curtis Mead. Well, we had him for one and a half at bats before he got hit on the wrist.

Patti 46:34
Oh no!

Pottymouth 46:36
On Monday night with Boston. So I'm flashing back here to my friend Blaze Alexander because it seems that Curtis is two weeks and one day behind him. He is another non-displaced flat fracture with no surgery, so I'm just going to keep my eye on Blaze and know that Curtis is going to be a little bit behind. I'm hoping that means postseason, but that's I like Connolly early to lose a really solid rookie pitcher and get. I mean, it's not Curtis's fault. It's you know the fucking pitcher. Early meanwhile is on the IL. He's still there, but he threw a bullpen in Nationals uniform at the Nationals, so like making that statement, even though he did do a lot of the teary-eyed, like buy friends kind of thing. Super buddies with Tole, who is also Tole actually thought that it was AI when he saw the first announcement of Curly's trade. He like contacted Early, like I catch this, and he's like, No, this is real. Oh damn. Yeah. So on the bright side, Connolly Early's from Virginia, not Northern Virginia, but still Virginia. So this is closer. Nationals is closer than Boston was easier for his family. And Paul Taboni famously came from Boston, and he worked with Boston when Early was drafted. This is the the Nationals GM. He's a big fan of Early. So Early's on track to start rehab today. Maybe it happened, and you know I just hope that Curtis Mead comes back fast. Him and Blaze, him and Blaze,

Patti 48:08
him and Blaze. All right, we're gonna do a little cross training with WNBA. I'm still working this out.

Pottymouth 48:15
This is a rough one.

Patti 48:16
This is a rough one. There's a piece in the Athletic, which I have found a little problematic, but there are some takes in there that are worth discussing. So I'm going to link to it. I would love for you listeners to read this and tell me what you think. So Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Indiana Fever is not one of my favorite people.

Pottymouth 48:35
Even fucking so

Patti 48:37
she's transphobic with a Barbie smile and but inclusive attitude, she says. So she doesn't know what the fuck she's saying half the time,

Pottymouth 48:47
except for being offensive.

Patti 48:49
Right, right. So anyway, like so, she's she's famous for in the same breath promoting the need to be inclusive while saying excluding transgender athletes from women's sports is common sense. So she's not one of my favorite people. So I didn't follow up to see if this rally actually happened, but there was a rally planned in support of her when the Indian Indiana fever was going to be in Minnesota yesterday, right? So there was an interview with Cheryl Reeve, who's the coast of Wow tequila tequila the coach of the links,

Pottymouth 49:22
yeah,

Patti 49:22
who said, and I don't disagree. Maybe said WNBA games should be safe spaces, no matter your opinion, and there's a right to peaceably assemble. I agree, there is a right to peaceably assemble. I'm still going to be. I I don't want you to be harmed. Yeah, if you're wrong with your opinion, by wrong I mean disagree with me and like you know common sense, real common sense, not Sophie's common sense. But

Pottymouth 49:48
but if it's a safe space, that means you shouldn't be like this gathering is specifically making people feel unsafe because it's saying you're not welcome.

Patti 49:56
Correct, correct. So there is that. So she was talking about what I don't like. This is really hard. She's trying to find places where there is common ground.

Pottymouth 50:12
Oh, which

Patti 50:13
is icky,

Pottymouth 50:13
right? Which I think about human rights. Yes, I

Patti 50:16
get the. Let's move the conversation forward. I disagree greatly with the if you're trying to find common ground with people who think some people are less than that's not okay. But she has an interesting point that I don't want to get I don't want it to get lost. Okay, in the I wish she hadn't put it this way. She said we have some issues. Number one, we need to protect trans kids. Every kid to me, it's a human rights issue.

Speaker 4 50:43
Absolutely, every kid has

Patti 50:45
a right to sports, regardless of being gender diverse, transgender. And then she goes on, and this is what I think is really very interesting. And I think she put it in a way that makes a lot of sense. She said, "The transgender issue isn't as big as the issues that we have in women's sports, and what she meant by that was not denigrating trans issues, but she's saying the people that are going after those as the biggest issue are losing sight of things that actually affect more people in more ways. So you have to think about that. You have to really parse those sentences out to understand she's not downplaying trans issues. She's saying there are things that affect sports, women's sports, that you should be paying attention to instead. That are right. Okay, so let me say the rest of it. She said whether it's cisgender men that have held us down for years in spaces like being able to have access to facilities and uniforms and locker rooms-all the things that these young girls that are sitting at games with anti-trans signs do-they understand actually what the real problems are and how they're being marginalized. That I love. It's like, what is the real risk to you as an athlete? Is it that a transgender person is going to be on your team, or is it that you don't have opportunities because of what cisgender men are doing? You're completely like eliminating your ability to play sports because you're a girl, right? And do you want inspections, right? Right. Like, do you want somebody to come start like inspecting who looks masculine and who may or may not be transgender on your team? What do you do? You really want that to be happening? Yeah, yeah. So I find this interesting. I'm going to link to this piece. I would love for you to read this. I would love to get other takes on this. Again, I found lots of it problematic, but there were some points that I would love to figure out how to present those in a way that's less problematic to talk sense to people who don't understand the larger context of the world.

Pottymouth 52:50
Yeah, and also, so I saw a piece that I'm going to quickly summarize now about did did you see that Celeste Keaton, the co-owner of the Seattle Storm, who is fined and sidelined because of a confrontation with anti-trans activists.

Patti 53:03
Yes.

Pottymouth 53:04
So so she

Patti 53:05
actually confronted a couple of teenagers outside the the the arena, and I believe swore at them. So

Pottymouth 53:15
potty mouth stamp of approval. Right. Yeah. So that's that's that thing. It's like

Patti 53:19
okay, you probably didn't handle this the right way. I probably don't disagree with you,

Pottymouth 53:23
right?

Patti 53:23
In what you did, but you have a responsibility. You have, yeah. All

Pottymouth 53:29
right.

Patti 53:30
Because do you want to have to then apologize? Because she did. She had to apologize. Okay. No, no, no. That's not it. Yeah.

Pottymouth 53:36
Damn it. Well, we will.

Patti 53:37
And I'm done with tequila.

Pottymouth 53:38
I might be just starting. I'm celebrating that the women's professional baseball league is in session, gavel smashing. Holy shit! Holy shit! We have been waiting a long time for this, and it's sort of like I I don't know. We looking back on our show, if you would have said like while you're still doing this show. There's gonna be a women's league. I wouldn't have believed it. I also didn't think he'd be

Patti 54:05
doing the show for 10 years. Right there's that. So you know maybe the math is funny that way.

Pottymouth 54:09
Well, the last women's league, and remember, and what I love about today's women's league is there's so much respect and credit to the women who played before. All American Girls Professional Baseball League ended in 1954, 72 years ago, and there are women from that league, like Maybell Blair, who is just you know the queen at this point, who are just gushing and so thrilled to see women on the field again. I need to say that they need to get their merch in. Like they need to start producing this merchandise. It's still fucking sold out. That one day that it sold out, there were 4000 orders for over 30 $300,000 worth of merchandise that disappeared in a day, and they apparently haven't figured out how to restock yet. They need to get going on.

Patti 55:00
I wonder if that translates into paying for salaries. I have no idea how much these players are getting paid. I'm guessing it's not a lot. Not enough.

Pottymouth 55:06
Definitely not enough. Their opening day was sold out. It was rainy, but the folks stayed there, and it was gorgeous. And you know what I noticed while I was watching game two, is the seats that we have are on camera the whole fucking time. Woo! So we have power. The first pitch before the first game was, of course, Maybell Blair, the queen, 99 years old, was pushed out in her wheelchair. But she threw that first pitch to Kelsey Whitmore, and I don't know if I put it in the notes, but look at Kelsey Whitmore's Instagram because she's got this conversation flashback that she had as a young player with Maybell, basically saying like, if you throw out this first pitch, I'm gonna catch it, and they did it. Oh my god! And and Maybell was next to her when she was announced as the first pick, and she was the first woman drafted to the San Francisco Fire Belles. So the first game she wasn't playing in because it was New York against L.A. Another link that I'm pretty sure I put in is the mascot, and the individual teams haven't seen their mascots yet, but the league has a mascot, and it is Maybell, and with the glorious hair, and the sunglasses, and the baseball bat cane, and full sass, and you know just dancing around, and the best scene is Maybell meeting Maybell. You must see that if you haven't yet. Do not listen to the anthem from Game One. And I shit. I should have written down who's saying it because Martha Reeves. Oh yeah. So she

Patti 56:34
Martha Reeves. I mean, come on, really? I I was afraid to click because I heard all the bad things. The the

Pottymouth 56:38
problem is there were two other women singing at the same time, and the three of them were not together. I don't know why they had two more people. That was the mistake. Martha Reeves should have been given free reign. I mean, or they should have been the

Patti 56:52
Vandals because that would have been right. It should have been her backup singers. Yeah,

Pottymouth 56:55
it did. Yeah. So click it if you're curious, but it's it's pretty painful. The game, however, like they were raring to go. The L.A. New York game, lots of hits, lots of runs. L.A. pulled off pulled off a 10 to eight comeback win over New York City. Love to see that. Going into the sixth, New York was up eight to four, which means that L.A. scored two in the sixth and four in the seventh. And reminder, these are seven-inning games, and that's the way it is for WBPL. What was fascinating, though, to the the LA opening pitcher, starting pitcher, was Ayami Sato, you know, absolute queen who has six gold medals with Japan for the Women's Baseball World Classic and has been known as being just untouchable. Well, she got touched, and I don't know if it's because she's 36, but she gave up 10 hits, seven runs. Four of those were earned in the first three innings. So reminder that she played in the Canadian baseball league, which is you know is very minor leaguey with the Toronto Maple Leafs. But very importantly, she was featured in that See her be her documentary, and you know there are some good women players out there. There were so many firsts, and I wish there were a better running record of this. There needs to be better stat keeping, and maybe somebody's doing it, but I haven't found it yet. I've just sort of piece this together from articles, so I'm hoping that that WPPL website comes together a little bit stronger. Maggie Fox, amazing LA player, two-way player, so many two-way players because you know she got the first hit. It was a two two run single in the first. The first to cross the plate was Monet Davis, and no, so Maggie Fox not only got the first hit, she got the first RBI, and then she also pitched. So she pitched two scoreless innings in in between Ayomisato and wait, wait, no, she she closed it, and she she gave up one hit. It was the other Maggie, so two Maggies. So I get confused. Maggie Fox closed it just one one run. Maggie Medlinger pitched the two scoreless in between and got the win. And she's also a two-way player. I don't think Sato pitches to bats. That is the New York starting pitcher was Rak Young Kim from Korea. So also fascinating. Looking at the international makeup of this league, we have 11 different countries, 60 players, ages 19 to 37. It's it's amazing assortment of women who've been just waiting to play professional baseball. So Kim had a rough first inning, but she ended up lasting four with four walks, and the magic number four for this first game is crazy. So Rakyong Kim for New York, four walks, four strikeouts, four runs, four innings. Denae Benitez has the honor of being the first woman to hit a home run for New York in the bottom of the fourth, and she went four for four. This I feel like you know somebody's got to place. No, I don't want to say the word. Bets is what I was going to say. No, no bets, no bets. I'm so yeah. Denae amazing. She's been playing banana ball, and she is the the captain of the New York team. She got two RBI, three runs scored, and a steal. However, the player of the game, of course, had to be from LA because they won the game. Isabel Villarreal got a pinch hit double to win it for LA. So I'm kind of wondering, like you know, she just had one at bat. There are all these other women. I'm looking at Benita as four for four, but I guess it has to be from the winning team. Just one fun fact from the game: shortstop Daima Maximiliana is from Curacao.

Patti 1:00:42
Hey, is she the only one from Curacao?

Pottymouth 1:00:44
I think she's the only one. Which is percentage-wise, probably makes like six

Patti 1:00:48
in MLB, right?

Pottymouth 1:00:48
Right. And then I watched the game on Sunday night because it was Boston, and I watched them get absolutely crushed by San Francisco. But Whitmore was pitching for San Francisco and just did really well. And Boston was just-it's hard. They were just looking a little bit, a little bit sloppy, sloppy. What I loved about watching the game was the the in-game interviews with Maybell Blair. That woman, man. I mean, she she brought up the phrase that we heard from Kat Williams when we when we talked to her about as long as I'm on this side of the dirt, there'll be women playing baseball. So she's like so happy to see this. But she also dissed the Mets. I guess the Mets flew her out there, and she's like, yeah, well they can't play, but they're nice people. She talked about like you know she's seen these girls playing since they were these women playing since they were girls, and if they stop playing, I'm just gonna hit him in the ass. Like they've got to keep this up. The women, the umpires were women. Kelly Elliott Dine was the ump on the base paths, and she was the first female umpire in banana ball. And to give just a little bit of cred, they made a really big point that the two women who are umping that game have only umped baseball. They have not umped softball, so it's not like you know these are all baseball players. And what brought me to absolute fucking tears was seeing the in-game interview of Amanda Giannaloni, who I think she actually got player of the game for San Francisco. She was amazing. Her pregnant wife was being interviewed. Oh, and I was there's so much that I loved about that, and just another one of those like I feel fucking old because when I was young, like all of this stuff just

Patti 1:02:30
not one of these things would have happened. Not one nobody

Pottymouth 1:02:32
would have believed this, but for this like young woman to be playing baseball and her wife being interviewed and talking about their baby coming, I was just awed or clemmed. Just you know, just so emotional. So there's a great link that we will include that has all the rosters with the name, position, and hometown. So you can see those variety of countries. Our friend Clara Rice, who we interviewed a while ago, I think it's lovely that hers just says USA. Like everybody else is like Silver Spring, Maryland, and Clarize USA and go back to that interview to understand why. Each team will be playing only 15 games. It ends September 6th. If you want to go, go August 19th and or 20th because we will be there and we have those great seats that are in view behind home plate. The managers, the coaches, the captains have all been named. All of the teams have women on the coaching staff, but only one team has women as the manager, and that is the New York Heights. Rachelle Rocky Henley, who played with the Colorado Bullets and other women's teams, she founded the San Francisco Bay Sox girls baseball program. So I'm thinking, like, why isn't she with San Francisco? Well, it's because you know I hate it when like the the men's record. I hate to use the word trumps, but you know goes over the women's cred in that area. Like I feel like she should have gotten San Francisco, but she is the only manager with actual experience coaching women from that program. The reason why she didn't get San Francisco is because Matt Williams, longtime giant, got San Francisco. Also, he has major league managing experience because he managed the Nationals. He was the manager of the year in 2014, and then 15 fell apart and was let go. But you know, strong cred there for Matt Williams to be managing the Fire Bells, and man, they just crushed the Boston Hunters yesterday. Eric Young Jr. is managing for L.A. Also, you know, look it up, check the check the link, and Keith fucking Falk is managing for Boston, and so my first like reaction was was crazy because this is the the closer for the 2004 winning game of the World Series like Boston lore so so much but he he really doesn't have a lot of coaching experience so I'm a little nervous about that especially after seeing how the Hunters were. But check the Fangraphs link for Deets and coaches because it goes through the whole coaching and the the coaches who are assisting these managers. Super super impressive. Each team has their cat their captain. Also check the link. I think we need better coverage. I want to know some place to go for the box scores. I did find Dubsports.io, which seems to be doing a pretty good job, but I feel like the WBPL site should be doing well. ESPN Select is broadcasting, but they don't have even like a drop down for the WBPL, so they also need better, you know, things ways that we can look stuff up for our podcast. You can watch selected games on Scripps Sports Network, which is free streaming, but it's not all the games. And if you are out of this country, you are very lucky for a number of reasons. But you can watch it on YouTube.

Patti 1:05:52
Nice.

Pottymouth 1:05:52
Yeah.

Patti 1:05:53
Oh, I can't wait! I'm so excited. I hope if any of you listeners can be there when we're there, that would be so fun.

Pottymouth 1:05:58
Actually, Brian just got tickets.

Patti 1:06:00
Yay! Yeah, hey Ryan, yay! So this is good. I so I would love to do meetups on this epic road trip, but especially at the women's games. Oh my god! I'm very excited about that. Maybe the team store will be stocked. Who knows?

Pottymouth 1:06:12
Oh, that would be so good.

Patti 1:06:15
In the meantime, I am the Lord Provost of our fantasy league, which is a wacky, wacky league with crazy rules, and things happened this week. So many things happened in our standings this week, including I am all the way down to the bottom of the basement. I welcome

Pottymouth 1:06:32
sunk

Patti 1:06:34
so far, and I'm okay with that because we were joking about we have tequila, and in fact we do. We do. We do tequila. We have it right now. So, Tridents and Tap Rooms still number one. Karen's crew still number two. But Bo back up over Bona's boyfriend's back up over All Star Cobalt 112,

Pottymouth 1:06:53
who has a pending trade with the Wicked Awesome team. So we'll see what happens there. So

Patti 1:06:56
that happens. That switched the three and the four. Wicked Awesome is still number five, and then all kinds of stuff happens. Sunny Slammers came from the bottom of the basement to number six. So good for you, Sunny Slammers. Then McLean Mean Pitching Machine, then Potty Mouth, and then me. So you and I are having tequila in these very adorable tiny little cups of tequila on them in the basement. So so

Pottymouth 1:07:21
much fun.

Patti 1:07:22
So things happen. So when we go to Chicago on the Epic Road trip, we're only going to Wrigley Field. We're going to see the White Sox play the Cubs, but we're not going to go to see the Cubs at home. To see

Pottymouth 1:07:34
the White Sox at home.

Patti 1:07:35
That White Sox at home. But now I want to

Pottymouth 1:07:38
kill it. I know. Well, it's it's because they didn't cooperate. Their schedule doesn't allow it.

Patti 1:07:41
It's true, but can I just tell you why? You don't. You're not going to care about this. You're not going to want to go, but I sure do. Okay. So the White Sox added a new concession offering to honor Munataka Murakami, and they're calling it the Moonshot. M-U-N-E shot moonshot for him, and it's actually a sushi snack that's packaged like a push-up ice cream treat. So like it's like a little tube with like a little. So it's contained, and there's two kinds. There's California crunch, which is like a California roll, and there's a shrimp tempura version. So it's not too much. It's not like really hardcore sushi. It's like sushi light. You know, like yeah, cooked stuff or whatever.

Pottymouth 1:08:21
But I can't speak to that. What I can

Patti 1:08:24
speak to

Pottymouth 1:08:25
is this

Patti 1:08:25
is packaged again, like a like an ice cream pushup, and it's got a straw-sized tube of soy sauce. So once you pour the soy sauce into the tube, you then use the straw as like the pushing implement. Oh, that's brilliant! So the packaging, the engineering is very very good, and how like typically one would eat sushi whether it's vegetarian or you know not with chopsticks, right? And that's messy if you're sitting in the stands at a baseball game, but in this little tube with a push up, like this makes so much sense.

Pottymouth 1:08:57
I am writing in for a vegetarian request. So they

Patti 1:08:59
had actually consulted with Murakami on his favorite kinds of sushi, so he gave a list. Maybe I need to

Pottymouth 1:09:05
write him.

Patti 1:09:05
They decided that those would be good choices. It is, however, $25, which is a lot, but they keep selling out.

Pottymouth 1:09:14
Sure, so people want

Patti 1:09:16
this, and usually like that kind of food, like sushi at a ballpark, would be like in the sweets or in like the you know expensive things, and they found a way to make it like sushi of the people. But you're right, they need a vegetarian version. Yeah. But now I'm a little sad that we're not going to go. I mean, I'd really rather be at Wrigley generally, but I

Pottymouth 1:09:34
know this would be fun. I'm just cranky that they didn't cooperate with our schedule. Them and the Reds.

Patti 1:09:40
Them and the res. What do you have going on this week?

Pottymouth 1:09:42
Not a lot. However, we do have a road trip coming up in 10 days. So today is Monday, October. We leave on the 13th. So on

Patti 1:09:55
Thursday.

Pottymouth 1:09:56
So we have Thursday. Right. Yeah. So we have one more episode. Episode to record before we go, and then our recording schedule is going to be all over the fucking place. It'll be like who knows when we're going to be dropping episodes. We'll be dropping lots of stuff on Patreon. We will be. I will try to keep up with social media.

Patti 1:10:16
My favorite thing that happened today, obviously my least favorite was like the trade deadlines. But my favorite thing that happened was we had our a staff meeting today of my department, and I got to say things like, "I'm leaving a week from Thursday for two and a half weeks. So if you're going to need anything from me, ask me now. Put me on your schedule because I'm going to be gone for two and a half weeks starting next week Thursday. That made me so very happy.

Pottymouth 1:10:38
That

Patti 1:10:40
is awesome. So listeners, some of you have already like chimed in on this, but we really want to know: Yes, what should we be eating at ballparks? What should we be drinking in these cities? Where should we make sure we stop on our off hours? Again, the cities involved are. I'm going to do it from memory. We're going to Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, Springfield, Illinois, Kansas City, St. Louis, and then a little stop in Louisville. We really we need a place to stay in Louisville, so we love those recommendations because we want to go to the Louisville Slugger Museum and you know also bourbon, and then we'll be in Cincinnati with family, so we're we're good there. No game there, and then on the way home. So if you have things that you want to make sure we consider doing or eating or visiting or whatever in any of those cities. Please let us know on social media.

Pottymouth 1:11:27

Oh, fantastic!

Pottymouth 1:12:01
So I thought that was gorgeous. I got to show you the picture. Hey, Zach! I hope you can find us in in Chicago. That would be super fun. And as far as like other like dreamy things to do, I wish I could have been volunteering at the Women's Baseball World Cup. But you know, again, we need to think about how to get there next year for the finals. We heard from Eliza from Boston, who's been working at Fenway for three summers. Wow,

Patti 1:12:23
fun!

Pottymouth 1:12:24
