I am, and so we were. You'll you'll you'll hear later. We were in Kansas City for a couple of days, and one of the giveaways was a George Brett replica jersey, which says royalty across the front. And honest to God, the the the gold trim around the neck is sparkly. Yes. So I not only say royalty, I have sparkles. The only thing missing is the tiara because why I didn't have room to pack it for this trip.

Day six of our road trip took us from Chicago to Milwaukee, and boy, was Milwaukee an adventure! Yeah, it was. We're going to start talking about the ballpark a little bit first, then we'll go into the game and boyfriends and whatever. But the first thing we noticed-well, actually, the first thing we noticed was how to get there. Right, and we were so excited about how to get there because initially we thought it's in the middle of nothing. Right? How do we do this? It says it's walkable, but it looks like it's highways. What do we do, and what do we learn?

So we learned that there are shuttles from bars, which is free shuttles. Fucking genius. Yes, and it said you're supposed to buy a beer at the bar, but nobody really checks. But why wouldn't you? Because it's a bar, and you're going to a baseball game, and

Yeah, so that was lovely there. And then we had this terrific ride. It was you know maybe 10 minutes in the shuttle. They drop us off in front. And what we learned about the the actual outside the ballpark because there's a huge tailgating culture.

there were there was all kinds of tailgating, which was very fun. Kind of walk through. Just have to do a shout out to my favorite sweatshirt that I saw, which was the the woman wearing a sweatshirt that said, "Your baseball pants are too tight. Said, "No woman ever, which we thought if we can get these and wear them at the women's league, that would be ideal. But we weren't able to get that. So if you if you listen to last week's episode, you know that we missed historic things twice in a row. This time we had a historic game. Yeah, we on the actual day we saw Milwaukee versus Seattle, and Milwaukee won 22 to zero, which tied a franchise record for the most runs scored in a game. Do we need to discuss weather before we discuss more of the game, or do you want to go right to the game?

Oh well, I don't know. I mean, I guess because you mentioned weather, we might as well discuss it. So the the important thing about Milwaukee is it has a roof, which was such a concept because we're so used to checking the weather report and you know packing our baseball bag accordingly, and just knowing that there was a roof was like wow, we can just go to the game without fear, right? Right, and it's not a

dome; it's an optional roof. Yeah, so they closed, they closed the roof, and we're like, oh, oh, yay for us! Because here I am in my, you know, it's a beautiful night for baseball t-shirt, and all of a sudden there's storms coming, and then there was a moment in inside the ballpark when there was this horrendous noise because every single person's cell phones went off simultaneously because there was a tornado warning.

But the game went on, and I thought one part that was fascinating after all the like the beeping and the echoing of the beeping, which was really cool, is is even though the roof's on, there were some windows that you could see the outside through on the side, but they had those all closed with the tornado warning. like shutters, the mechanical shutters that moved to close us to keep us safe. So we had no idea what was going on, except for we knew it was raining because it was also raining a little bit inside, which kind of cracked us up. Was like, huh, we're under a roof and we're getting rained on, or our neighbors are getting rained on. Yeah,

I think it was just our special row. It was the end of our special row that had a little bit of of rain, and that worked out actually in our favor because we didn't have an aisle seat, but the folks who did have the aisle seat got wet and moved away, and so all of a sudden our path was clear, so we could get out of our our row without any problems.

So you know another sort of backstory on this is when we last recorded, we were convinced that we were a curse because the first three games that we went to, the home team lost, and two of those three were squeakers. But this Milwaukee Seattle game was anything but. It sort of like swung the pendulum all the way over to the other side. It wasn't convincing in the beginning, which makes it even more fun. The first run scored in the bottom of the first inning was a single by former baseball boyfriend of mine, William Contreras, and I've been enjoying watching Big Brother Wilson on the Red Sox and Baby William hit that first run single with Jake Bauer crossing the plate due to a Cal Raleigh error. Poor Cal, he's had a really not having a bad bad year, and then there were no more runs until the bottom of the fifth pitcher's duel.

Until we didn't, and then my baseball boyfriend. So I don't think we mentioned what baseball boyfriends are for our new listeners. If you stay with us through the off season, you will hear us team by team, each pick a player for each team because there's something super cool about them, and we just basically want to hang out and have a beer with them. Call them our baseball boyfriends. We get a whole collection for the season, whittle them down to our fantasy teams, but we keep track of all the guys that we chose. So I chose David Hamilton because, of course, his Red Sox roots and that big trade, and he singled in the bottom of the fifth, and then in the David Hamilton way, and this is what his his value was known as: stole second, and then stole third, two bases in one inning, and scored on Jackson Chodeyo, who's my last year baseball boyfriend pick for the Brewers. He got an RBI, and that made it a very reasonable two to nothing, which also seemed you know like this is still a competitive game, right? Yeah. And then baseball boyfriend current David Hamilton. So he and Kyle Harrison, who was pitching, and that was another huge highlight for me. Those are the two who came over from the Red Sox in exchange for Caleb Durbin and Andrew Monasterio and Siegler, whose name I'm blanking right now. And of course, I didn't take good notes. But it's it's a win win. It's the best trade ever because both teams are getting what they needed. So Kyle Harrison pitched five innings, two hits, two walks, six six strikeouts. Looked great. David Hamilton not only did he get those two steals for me, he got a home run, and it was. His fourth fourth home run, so he's not a home run hitter, but we were there and we saw it. Fourth home run in the season in the bottom of the sixth, and then just I don't know. Do you have more scoring to talk about? Because I do, I do. Okay, there's so much more.

So I don't currently have a Brewers active boyfriend, but I was very excited to see Dominic Kenzone from Seattle because I, you know, he's one of my espresso espresso boys. He did hit a double. He was DHing, so he was responsible for one out of the five hits for Seattle, which wasn't a lot. Didn't score because Seattle didn't score. But my past, my former once and forever boyfriend, Kristen Yelich homered, and that was lovely to see. And not only did that he did did he do that, but in the bottom of the eighth, he hit what was a sacrifice fly, which you know scored one runner. And then Julio Rodriguez,

did well. He lost count of the outs, and weirdly, this was scored a throwing error. But what it was was him assuming it was two outs, turning around and throwing the ball that he caught for the sac fly into the stands. That was a ball in play, which means the other two runners on base scored runs. And so, what was a sac fly with one RBI ended up scoring three runs.

Yeah, no, it was crazy. I was really happy to see Joey Ortiz, who was a former Brewers boyfriend of mine, because he used to be on the O's, and this was another case of of trades working out because he was getting no time with the Orioles, and he's kind of a star. He's a favorite with the Brewers. He's getting stuff done, both with with the bat and on defense. So it was really fun to see him.

That's same with David Hamilton. Like he was definitely that guy who is filling in all over the place, but he seems pretty solid with the Brewers and super happy for that. So this crazy game in which the Brewers scored 22 runs out of the 12 Brewers who ended up playing because there was some pinch hitting, eight got at least one RBI. That's a lot of RBI. They

Might as well. I do need to add that I thought I didn't have a Seattle boyfriend, and then Brandon Donovan comes on the screen. I was totally sleeping on him, so he has been out for a really long time, and I missed him coming back. He came back on August 4 after being on the IL since may 15 with a left groin strain, which probably had to do with last season's last off season's hernia surgery, so he's back. I didn't have him on my roster because I was not paying attention, and he hits a double in the top of the first. So he is one of those other guys who got a hit for Seattle. He moved to third base on a wild pitch, and he is the only Seattle player that made it as far as third base. I did, so I got all excited once I saw him play, and I thought I got to get him on the lineup right away. And then we got busy. This has been a really busy trip, and we're doing all this doing some stuff. And so I finally remembered once we got settled here in Rocheport to try to put him on my lineup yesterday, Sunday the 23rd, and that morning he was concussed in the batting cages before the game. Not even in the game. Not even in the game. So he's on my IL now. He had been doing really well. So between August 4 and August 22, in those 14 games, 58 plate appearances. He was batting 283, 684 OPS. So he's got to put on the gas a little bit. But he has only played 39 games total this season, with 277 average, 780 OPS overall. So, if his head is okay, I hope his head is okay. Yeah.

No. Two more things about the stadium, the other song, like the things that they that they all do, they sing "Roll Out the Barrel, which, as a nice Polish girl, I really really enjoyed, and yes, knew the words too. I didn't need the thing on the screen, and I will say they the Milwaukee Brewers, yeah, whether it's their name or not, had the best craft beer situation, both with numbers of craft beer in an easily found location, all together with bartenders, with pourers who knew what they were talking about. So that was a lovely thing, and I had a pistachio cream ale from Indeed Brewing, and it was one of my favorite beers of the trip so far. We've been we're 1700 miles from this trip,

Yeah. No, for sure. So the next day, we had an adventure where we were headed to Springfield to see the women's professional baseball league, and so on the way we had to stop and pay our respects. That's right. We stopped in Rockford to see Maybell Blair Park, the home of the Rockford Peaches,

and it's also exciting because the International Women's Baseball Center. Thank you. I was like museum IWC. Their their future site is there, and so we saw the signs that said future site, and we know that the Women's Baseball World Cup finals are supposed to be held there next year, and hopefully we can go and check it out. Yep, it was it was very cool. It felt right. It felt right. And then we moved on to Springfield, which was so much fun. A quick thing. So in Springfield, they play at a ballpark that has an independent league also playing there. It's called Robin Roberts Park. It seats 5000 people, so it feels you know kind of like a nice minor league park. I had that vibe to it. The most common jersey there was Kelsey Whitmore.

So in that first game that we saw, that was the San Francisco Fire Bells against the New York Heights. There was so much action. My shoutout for that stadium is the woman with tequila because we were looking around for something to drink. The beer offerings were much better on the board than they were in reality because beer hasn't been coming through. Although we did end up drinking a really good IPA that night, we did. But there was a woman that we passed by that said, "I have tequila, and we're like, "You know, that's always a good thing to have.

definitely. But I am so excited that I scored my Boston Hunters hat that night. So this is the San Francisco New York game, and the merch, the booth, was just the line was crazy when we first got there, and there were signs that said all hats sold out and a whole bunch of other shit shows. All jerseys sold out. Yeah, and by the end of that night, all the San Francisco, everything was sold out. Right.

Yep. Yep. For sure. I went. I really like the colors of the San Francisco, and I thought maybe that maybe that's you know because I have generic league stuff, but no. So I kind of went over there. They had nothing. They had maybe six or 7t-shirts for other teams, nothing for San Francisco, and wow, it was so picked over. It was crazy, and but people are lined up for like the scraps.

Yeah, which is exciting, you know. So many, and there were so many people in the stands with gear, tons of gear. And so in the middle of the game, I went out probably for the bathroom and wandered by and saw a hunter's hat, and there were literally three hunters hats in the corner, and I was like, "That I'm taking that as a sign. Yes, please, I will buy one. I have my hunter's hat. So that game was all New York and San Francisco, despite my hunter's hat. New York scored five at the top of the first inning, and then in the bottom of the first inning, it was crazy fun to see Kelsey Whitmore, you know, absolute star hit a two-run home run, which also at that point tied her with Dana Benitez's home run record at seven. The barrage continued with so much scoring. Skylar Kaplan, also on San Francisco, got her first career home run. Super fun to watch, three RBI home run, and then by the end of the first inning, San Francisco was up six to five. So it was a long first inning. It was also a long second inning. New York scored again at the top of the second. San Francisco scored again in the bottom of the second to bring it to six to eight. And then in the top of the fifth, Denae Benitez said, "No, this tie will not stand. And she goes back on top with her eighth career home run. I believe that they are tied up again, though. At this point, at the time of recording, so the New York Heights won 11 to eight after a lot of back and forth and some lightning. So in the middle of what was it, the sixth inning, right? Yeah,

I I didn't see it, but you could sort of feel it in the air that rain was coming, and they scuffled on the field and were all in metal stands, and they called it and said, you know, waiting to see what happens with the lightning, and we thought we better go, and they didn't start again, so we made the right choice. no, we sure did. So we went back the next day, which was great. We did we had super fun things with friends around Springfield, so that was fantastic. So you know we had some non baseball cultural things, Frank Lloyd Wright, possibly two breweries.

Yep, yep. And the one we decided was the winner was the only one. We could actually take with us that edged out the availability to actually take that to buy that to take on the road was excellent. But the very special thing about that night was friend of the pod Brian came and met us there with his son, and so that was super cool to watch the game with a longtime listener.

Absolutely, and my friends who live in Madison, Wisconsin, Beth and Barb came down, and so we had like a whole little group there cheering on, and it was like everybody also around us kind of joined in. Everybody was super friendly. It was a great, great crowd. There was a lot of discussion about scoring happening a couple of rows ahead of us because things got pretty complicated. So this was the big game that I was excited about because it was my first time seeing my Boston Hunters, and they were playing against New York. So of course, there's this big rivalry. The the highlight, I think, well, one of the highlights for me was interviewing. I was going around with the mini mics, and I interviewed a woman pregame. Who, hi, if if you're if you're listening, I still have to process the the audio, so I don't have the name written down yet. But it was a woman who had played baseball, like she's seemed to be sort of like around our age, and talked about playing baseball and playing baseball in a women's team in Florida, and just how hard it was in a lot of ways, and how amazing it was for her and her father to be there watching this game. And then Maybell Blair, the the mascot, her dance moves. Also, we've got a little bit of recording. Ally Schroeder, starting pitcher, she's in the documentary "See Her, Be Her. So please check that out because that highlights her career as a firefighter and just how absolutely badass this woman from Canada is. And and on the Canadian team, she was really solid. The teams were tied at one after three innings, and then New York did the New York thing. They busted out with three runs in the top of the fourth, although only one of those was actually an earned run for Allie. And then I, you know, I'm so sorry for Olivia Bricker, the relief pitcher for the Hunters. She just didn't, couldn't hand it hold it together. She gave up four runs, all earned on just two outs, and then they brought in Denver Bryant, who's my previously announced first baseball girlfriend. She is amazing. She had started the game with leadoff DH. They bring her in to pitch. The guys in front of us were really glad about that because the other team, the Heights, when they brought in players to pitch, and were coming off of positions. It was a whole lineup thing, and it was a lot of confusion in the scorekeeping. But Denver being a DH and then pitching made it super super clean, and it was clear at that point she had to finish the game. So there aren't a lot of players on these teams, and once you know you've run out of pitchers. You've kind of run out of pitchers. She only ended up with one earned run on two innings and one out with three walks and a strikeout. The top of the sixth was one of the big moments of the game. Sure was. We watched history. The first manager ejection in WPPL history was Jameel Weeks, who is the new manager for the Boston Hunters, and if you there's a great link that's going to be in the show notes, and you can watch for yourself, because I believe it's because there were only two umpires, and the woman who was closest to the action. So the the question was a shortstop caught the ball, threw it to third. On at that moment, it seemed like a double play because the woman at who was on third base had a lead, so it seemed like she caught the ball and she caught a fly

If you look at the video, you can understand it's kind of hard to slow it down. Her glove hits the dirt, so dirt comes up. So the the umpire might have seen the dirt and thought that the ball hit the dirt. I think, in my very biased view, you all can check for yourselves. I think it was a catch. I think it should have been an out. I think at the time when we were watching Jameel argue with the umpires, he seemed very cool and collected.

We have no idea what was said in that group, but it was like a peaceful, you know, departure back to the dugout, and the the umpires assumed their positions behind home plate and near second.

This is somebody else, but does some lip reading, and it looks like Jameel said to the umpire, "Watch your mouth, which makes me, you know. So therefore, manager's not supposed to say that to the umpire. I understand rules broken, being, you know, rude to the umpire or whatever the name of the rule is. However, if he's saying to her, "Watch your mouth. I'm wondering what she said to him, and we just don't know.

We don't know. And then when he was ejected, he went back to the dugout, and they came back out and took the slowest walk humanly possible along the third base line to exit. And like he was halfway there, and all of a sudden, you know, Justine is like following him out to have a little conversation outside the fence, and I would love to know what happened. But he was definitely taking his time.

There is so much more I want to know about that. Oh, and what happened in the conversation? Absolutely. So notably, this is only the fourth game for Jameel Weeks. In case you don't remember, I was very excited to hear that Keith Falk was named the manager of the Boston Hunters, you know, famed pitcher from 2004, winning the World Series for the Red Sox, and he was actually fired. He was dismissed on August 9th, and there's depending on what article you read, depends on how it's explained. He was commuting from Arizona, and according to him, this was approved by the WPBL CEO Keith Stein, who I know nothing about. But apparently, this man told mr. Folk that yes, you just have to be in Springfield from Wednesday through Sunday, and you can be at your home in Arizona the other the rest of the time. That's not an easy commute, and it's-I mean-that's so shitty for so many reasons. And apparently, Justine was not aware of this and did not like this arrangement and said so. She also pointed out about relating with the players and felt like I don't know if it's old guy, young. It's a very young team. All of Boston is under 26 years old. You know, before he was dismissed, I saw players saying nice things about him, but I don't know if they were not feeling comfortable. So Folk is disappointed. He said, "quote I think the ownership just had kind of a change of mind on the schedule we'd agreed upon. So his record in those measly three games were two losses and one win. I think the Bostons are still the Boston Hunters are at the bottom of the barrel right now, but Jamil Weeks also has his own MLB cred. He was a major league player from 2011 to 16. His first two years were definitely by far the most play time when he was with the A's. He was with the A's actually three years, but those first two years were most of his major league years. He then went to the Orioles for half of a year in 2014, and then at the I believe it was at the deadline went to the Red Sox for the rest of that season and the following season, and ended his career with the Padres in 2016. But all of those years after his first two were really just a couple dozen games. I think a really good feature or or qualification for him as a manager is he spent a year playing in Mexico with the the Mexican league that plays at the same time as MLB. That's LMB with the Acereros de Manclova. Before he was named manager of the Hunters, he was actually on the coaching staff for the L.A. I don't know if it still is, like the largest scoreboard in MLB, and at the time it was the only one that was doing things like showing statistics and all that. So it was kind of a big deal to have this beautiful scoreboard. They have fountains because it's a city of fountains. It's laid out beautifully. It's got the great kids section.

So he's notably from Kansas City. He's a hometown guy. He loves this team, and he's been involved from the get-go. He went there in person, and this is also extra baseball boyfriend points for putting like your body in the action. You're not just throwing money at it. You're not just putting your name on it. But he went to the hospital with the cleats, brought them around, and had the kids draw on them. And not only that, but he goes there on the regular. This isn't just a one-time thing for Players' Weekend. He visits there. He knows the kids. He knows their family. He said, at the end of the day, it means as much to me as it does for them to have something cool like this. So I gotta love it. I think that's you know great pick, and he is absolutely learning from the elder statesman on the team, Salvador Perez, and he's going to be going into that. You know, every day, he is pretty much the everyday catcher at this point. Vinny Pasquantino also got a home run, which was exciting, and I think I picked him last year. He went two for four with a home run in the sixth, and I knew that the Pasquatch was coming. So Vinny Pasquantino, every time he gets a hit, even there's this Sasquatch Pasquatch Bigfoot guy that walks along a little thing in the outfield, and I don't think I have a really good picture of it because I just didn't know where to look that first night. So the Royals are partnering with Hallmark Cards on this because Hallmark Cards has what's called the the Crown Center, which is a big entertainment and shopping complex that that already exists, right? So, the proposal for the new ballpark complex would be to use part of this existing crowd center. Apparently, part of that property is not well used right now. So, like, well, how about we toss a ballpark in there and we work with Hallmark to develop this? So, the week we were there, they made some major announcements about the ballpark, including the total cost is going to be over 2 million $2 billion, right? And approximately nine $911 million would be from the royals and other private sources, which means the remaining more than half, 1.1 4 billion, would be from public sources.

So interesting. Okay, so the Kansas City Council approved a plan that would provide $600 million of this public funding, and a lot of it comes from state sources like tax credits, existing infrastructure funding, but it still leaves like sort of a 101 million dollars as quote other public sources that they haven't really identified. The biggest pushback about this is because council acted on this without putting it out for a public vote, without allowing the citizens to vote on. Do you think this is a good use of public funds as public tax dollars. What do the voters think? The council didn't care, so that's where the biggest push. Like a lot, a lot of voters said we're kind of interested in this, but you need to talk to us more about this. And there's actually some housing that exists right now. It's kind of luxury housing, but in that Crown Center, oh, and people said, "I just spent all this money, and now I'm going to be looking at a ballpark.

So there's other for some people, yes. But there are, in fact, other people who would appreciate it as much as us. But the complex, as in all of these, whenever you hear about a new ballpark proposal, restaurants, stores, entertainment, offices, hotels, housing, green space outside of the stadium, so that's kind of amorphous. This big sentence full of oh, you know, all these other things. They do estimate that this, if this goes through, it will create like 200 more permanent jobs in Kansas City. A lot of the existing jobs from the current stadium would just transfer over, so those would not be new jobs. Who we don't know the same people would have them because if it's different location, it may not be feasible. But there would be a net gain in permanent jobs in Kansas City. The Royals will sign a 30-year lease to remain at the new ballpark. Now this is interesting. They pledge to donate over $50 million to community groups and local initiatives. That's $50 million over 30 years. They can do better. They can do better. Now the things that they're saying, like upfront things, would be like $5 million to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Yay, we're all for that. So good. There's a Houseway Gateway program which we get 5 million. There's a 1% for the arts program. We get $14 million, and then the rest of it would be sort of an annual case by case thing, but there's there's more money there. There's more money there. Hallmark is also talking about building their new headquarters, you know, near that, and that would be part of the cityscape view from the ballpark. And cityscape views are so much more interesting than two hotels and a gas station and a highway. So I'm interested in following this because I'm fascinated by public funding for ballparks and stadiums, and part of this, of course, the Chiefs are moving across the border into Kansas. So, like when we were there, the Arrowhead Stadium is you know shares parking basically with Kauffman, so it's right there. And so they're they're leaving. So I think that was part of it. If they're out, we're out. What's going to

Yeah. So I just, you know, as I was going through my pictures and videos, I have so so many, and I'm gonna start putting those up gradually on Patreon and other social media places. One was focusing on the issue of Jackie Robinson's integration into baseball, setting the the pace for the rest of the country, so that it was the precedent. It wasn't as a result of other integration efforts. It's baseball that really started integration. His integration date was 1947. United States military integrated in 1948. Brown versus Board of Education was 1954. So baseball really led the way, and that's like so much of what we talk about on this podcast is how baseball is so connected to so many other issues, and it was just so heartwarming to see the passion that Bob talked about. You know the importance of baseball in integrating society, and the second thing that I will hold dear is the attitude of Buck O'Neil. So, so Bob talked a lot about Buck O'Neil. They were great friends. Buck O'Neil was was involved in the museum when when Bob first started. He was the

and he when when they finally decided in 2006 to let in players of the Negro Leagues into the Hall of Fame, he missed by one vote. And Bob repeated that you know there was no limit. He immediately said he wanted to speak at the ceremony. He celebrated the other 17 who got in, and you know, tragic. He died that year in October of 2006. He got in posthumously. Am I saying that word right? You are in 2022, so not that long ago. So he deserved it, but to take that kind of loss with and Bob said it, of course, so much better than me. And I'll try to find the video to put out there with positivity and just saying like, I'll you know I'll go on and and celebrate those who'd made it.

I know a long time ago I took this like soccer football detour and promised that it would be short, but I feel like I have to tie a little bit of a bow on this because if you'll recall, after the semifinal between Argentina and England, Argentinian players had a big ass banner that said Las Malvinas son Argentina's, which means the Malvina Islands are Argentinian. You know, English folks call them the Falklands. There was a war over it. Hundreds of people died horribly in this war over this territory that's off the coast, essentially of Argentina. Well, FIFA has come down with a fine on this. Argentina has been fined $310,000 for this sign. Even worse, though, I think is their next home match, 50% closure. So 50% of the stadium needs to be closed at their next home match. And then I don't understand this next phrase. Maybe you can go to the athletic article and see if you understand it better, but the second match apparently at home is partial closure, whatever that means. So the the reasoning is even more obscene. What FIFA has given it says, "quote Using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature. Okay, discrimination and racist abuse, and order and security at matches. So this is absolutely the opposite. This is anti-colonial message, is what it is. And and saying that they're being discriminatory and racist in any way just doesn't make any fucking sense.
