They Drank All the Beer in Tampa
Patti 0:18
Hi and welcome to episode 482 of No Crying in Baseball, the Parade Beers episode. My name is Pattii. I'm here with my friend Pottymouth. Hey, Pottymouth.
Pottymouth 0:26
Hey there. How's it going?
Patti 0:27
I'm good. What you been doing?
Pottymouth 0:29
So I spent the afternoon at a wine tasting that had a lot of wines to taste. Like literally more wines than we had time to taste. So we got there late, which is probably a good thing, but in an hour we tasted 20 something wines,
Patti 0:48
all in an hour.
Pottymouth 0:49
Yeah, but they were small.
Patti 0:50
I admire your efficiency.
Pottymouth 0:51
But people were so friendly. Sure, they are. And then at the end, where that like they had to get rid of the you know the dregs of the wine. Some people had we didn't, but got like extra pours that they were going into the to the liquor store to get their disc. So there was also a deal where if you were buying the wine that you just tasted, you got 20% off. So we had to pass
Patti 1:12
that up. Yeah, and you're stimulating local economy, which is very important. Yes,
Pottymouth 1:16
it's a small business. It's a great place here in Silver Spring, and so they have this biannual. That's twice a year, right? As opposed to, or is it semiannual? Biannual would be every other semiannual. Semiannual wine tasting. So if anybody lives in the in the area, definitely get on the Fenton Fenton Street. Fenwick. Fenwick. That's it. Fenwick wine and beer get on there. Please bear with us.
Patti 1:44
Please bear with us. We're doing our best. It's
Pottymouth 1:45
it was really really fun.
Patti 1:47
Okay, I'm glad about that. Oh oh
Pottymouth 1:48
wait wait wine guy. So hi wine guy. The the last table that we tasted at was a guy in a Capitals Championship shirt. So he was serious Capitals fan, and we started talking, of course, baseball, as one does. As one does. And he grew up a Mets fan, so respect for that. We had a moment on 1986, but when he came to live in this area, he's he became an Orioles fan and brought his kids up as Orioles fans. And that's some good parenting. Yeah. So we we discussed that. So shout out to Wine Guy because he said he was going to listen to the podcast. So much appreciation, and it was and that we did buy one of those bottles. So wonderful, he did his job.
Patti 2:31
I like it. So I had a bunch of local Halloween fun this weekend, as I do almost every year. I volunteered for our town's monster bash, which is like attended by a zillion families in our little town, Tacoma Park, and there's costume contests, and we have just a really high percentage of homemade costumes and people with attitude and humor. So I'm thankfully I've done this enough times where I can kind of call my own shot, which is please don't give me a small child category because I don't want to pit four year olds against you. Like like how do you decide who the cutest four year old is? You can't. So give me give me funniest adult. Great, that's that's fantastic. Yeah. But I want to just shout out the best group costume was the dollies. It was Dolly Parton, the Dolly Llama, Salvador Dolly, Dolly the sheep. Actually, two of those, and a construction guy pushing a dolly.
Pottymouth 3:19
That's so good. So
Patti 3:19
it was really very spectacular. So so shout out to to the dollies. And then I went out also a local event last night. One of our tiny little local art spaces did a for free outdoor showing of the 1922 silent film of Nosferatu with live musical accompaniment. Oh my god! Like the guys were right there, and I wish I could remember their names because they're famous. And it was like they had a harpsichord and they had all of these things that were like when you watch like old timey like radio shows stuff like sound effecty things so it was a combination of you know of harpsichord and sound effects and like it was spectacular wow and the um the film itself on a big old projector like the old days they borrowed like an archive copy from the Enoch Free Library in Baltimore. Amazing, and it kept going wrong in all the best ways because it looked scarier. So that seemed right, and so it was really fun. And there were, you know, the yard was packed, and we had a great time. So that was good. And then today is back to election stress. You're hearing this on Tuesday. It's election day. Go out and vote. Make
Pottymouth 4:20
sure you voted. If you
Patti 4:21
didn't vote early, go ahead and find your polling place and get there and do your thing. We had I, you know, our local election is a separate ballot because in Tacoma Park we're crazy in a good way, yeah. And that we want to teach people good habits. So 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds can vote in Tacoma Park just on local elections, as as can any adult resident of Takoma Park, no matter your citizenship status, it's Takoma Park. Yep, and so did that, and then I'll go to the actual polling place for the state ballot on Tuesday with all of you, right? Because you're all going to vote because your life does in fact depend upon it.
Pottymouth 4:54
Yes, I will be there doing that, and then we will drink. Sure, we will because.
Patti 5:00
That seems like well, I'm going to do that. Then I'm going to go back to work. Ah, after that, but after that, after the
Pottymouth 5:05
work,
Patti 5:06
after the work comes the okay now,
Pottymouth 5:08
right?
Patti 5:09
Okay, my friends, batting down the hatches.
Pottymouth 5:12
All right, here we go.
Patti 5:14
On today's show, so much World Series stuff, including BFs, cellies, and artifacts. Players' Choice Awards so full of boyfriends. The hot stove gets fired up at least for a couple of weeks till everything shuts down, and our police blotter we're remembering some guys, and we've got winter ball. Cheers! All right, so normally we start with boyfriends who are the guys we pick in the off season. So we'll be starting there pretty soon. Each of us picks one guy per team in the off season tells you their story because basically somebody we like to go have a beer with. They're funny, they're kind, they've got a good backstory. They do philanthropy that we like. They're they're good at baseball, whatever it is. Ideally,
Patti 5:53
so we're going to tell you some stories about some current and some past boyfriends in this context of the World Series. So let me start with I'm a little off a little off topic about the World Series TV fun. Much was made. Like I was joking the whole time about you know networks are going to love the the small market World Series. Right. Actually, the problem wasn't small market. The small market. The the problem was the short series because in game one, in game one, small market teams, right, scored 12.2 6 million viewers. And to put that in perspective, last year when the fricking Dodgers, they don't get any more large market teams were playing. It was 12.3,
Pottymouth 6:32
really, which is not
Patti 6:33
hugely different. I
Pottymouth 6:35
had no idea. It's not hugely different. So
Patti 6:37
the problem for the advertisers, oh, I'm so sorry. My heart goes out to you. In no way whatsoever is is that there were only five games instead of seven games. Not that they were small market because people were watching these because it was a pretty fun series. Oh, it was
Pottymouth 6:51
so much fun.
Patti 6:52
So Christian Yelich was my once and forever boyfriend for a while, and I want to tell you this. There was a little story about how the Brewers got their minds around being World Series contenders, and it's the same story as how Christian Yelich became the captain of the team. So back in July of the season, they had a terrible loss in San Francisco. They called the team meeting, and Yelich basically said, "We need to get it together because we are going to win the World Series, and it fired the guys up, right? And so they got a little bit better. Wow! And like Matt Matt Arnold, who's the their president of baseball operations, said that yellow doesn't ever mince words. He knew it; that was real, right? So like you know, he's one of those. I don't talk a lot, but when I talk, it's because it matters, and the guys know
Pottymouth 7:37
it. Can can I just say one thing about Matt Arnold? He does not look like a president of baseball operations. You know, I'm just used to maybe just shaded by the whole Red Sox experience with Breslow. He's got like a backwards baseball hat on. Like he looks like a baseball player. He he definitely looks like one of the guys, and I just love that vibe for the Brewers. That's pretty cool.
Patti 7:57
That's a very Brewers kind of thing. So then again in August, that's when like we've talked the past couple of weeks about how the Brewers have a lot of accountability. They expect their players to play a certain way, and if they don't, there are consequences. So they're not personal. They're like, here's what we got to do. If you're not doing it, you're going to sit this game. You're going to learn. You're going to get better. That's you know, it's not personal, right? So this accountability stuff really kicked in in August. It's like we got to play clean. We got to win more than we lose. We have to win every game. We have to win more than we lose. Garrett Mitchell says when he speaks, you listen. Jake Bauer says he knows his voice is important in the clubhouse. He's willing to share his thoughts when the time is right. There's not much more you can ask for. The guy lives and breathes the Milwaukee Brewers. There hasn't been a day when it's been about Christian Yelich.
Pottymouth 8:38
And those are all past picks of yours, right? I don't
Patti 8:42
think so. No, I don't think so. But I like the. I gotta look into
Pottymouth 8:46
that. I like all definitely not mine.
Patti 8:48
I like all of these guys.
Pottymouth 8:49
Yeah,
Patti 8:50
yeah. No, it's all just all about Christian Yelch, which is funny because we're talking about how it's not about Christian Yelich. But but this this is how you get to be a captain, right? You are there for the team. Like you're you're teaching the new guys how to bunt? You are you are doing captainy things as opposed to like, hey, everybody, look at me! I've got a C on my jersey, right? Yeah. So moving on to celebrations. So the day after they win, I went on a Wednesday. Thursday night, the Packers are hosting the Panthers for a Thursday night football game. Right. So after the the first quarter, the guys show up, kind of led by Yelly and and and Sal Freilich and and Brandon Woodruff. They took the trophy out, right? So they had a couple of moments of woo, you know, here we are cross training and you know celebrating with because it's the day before. They had a whole day to kill before the parade. So why not go to the football game?
Pottymouth 9:38
Sure, right. And notably, Sal is your this year's pick.
Patti 9:42
Sal was my last year's pick.
Pottymouth 9:43
Last year? Yeah, not this season.
Patti 9:45
Not this season. Yeah, no. So
Pottymouth 9:47
I am so putting it on the line.
Patti 9:50
I know. No, you got a Sal is this year's. This Sal is mine. Who's last year's? But anyway, he's a former high school football player, so he did a Lambo leap. Into the stands as part of the celebration, and he said, "It's been a dream of mine." I was in the end zone. I saw it, and I said, "I gotta go." So I went.
Pottymouth 10:07
That's crazy. So I
Patti 10:09
appreciate that. The in the parade, they had 750,000 spectators. They were they they were they were guessing like 400 or some 1000. They got so many, but Pat Murphy said, "I kept thinking I saw the same people over and over. We're just coming in a circle. There's no way there's that many people who live here. You will appreciate this because this is weird.
Pottymouth 10:28
The
Patti 10:29
guys that got shirtless, both mine, both my past boyfriends. So Sal and and Bryce Turank were the ones who they said it was like you know in honor of like all the tarps off stuff. Which I mean, I would rather have the precedence be it's a World Series parade. Of course, you're going to do this, or
Pottymouth 10:45
like Magnopoli,
Patti 10:46
or Mike Napoli. There you go. So after the parade, there's a post parade rally, and Kristen Yelich says, "We've had way too many parade beers. I took the trophy to the face, and I got a black eye. Oh, it's all worth it. It's for you guys. We should celebrate forever.
Pottymouth 11:02
Oh my god!
Patti 11:03
So you gotta like that. And then the last thing I want to talk about World Series Wise is what goes to the Hall of Fame. I want to tell you a quick story. When these things, once they arrive at the Hall of Fame, they are not touched by anybody who's not wearing gloves. For for from like that moment when they arrive to forever, they are an artifact. They are the property of the Hall of Fame, and they are special. And they are treated as such. Our intern had a lovely time actually going to see the Washington Nationals pieces that were that were sent to the Hall of Fame after the the 2019. Yeah, wow. For a second, so here's what. So the actual Hall of Fame president himself was at the game and kind of went around like I'm picturing with a trick or treat bucket. Like what he got? What he got? What he got? Because the list is long of what he collected to take back with him. So Aaron Ashby's White Rex specs.
Pottymouth 11:56
Oh my gosh! Yeah, so classic. What he got? Oh my God! Above and beyond, series
Patti 12:00
MVP William Contreras's catcher's gear. Yeah,
Pottymouth 12:03
of course.
Patti 12:03
Pat Murphy's navy hoodie. Jacob Mizraski's cap from the game where he threw 51 pitches over 100 miles per hour.
Pottymouth 12:11
That is so crazy, so crazy.
Patti 12:13
Sal Frelich's batting gloves after the game where he had the the game tying home run in game two. Kristen Yeltsch's road jersey with the captain patch on it. The baseball, the David Hamilton hit for an RBI single during that eight-run inning.
Pottymouth 12:26
Oh yeah,
Patti 12:27
Cooper Pratt's bat. This is actually pretty funny because before Game Four, Rowicz, who's the the the Hall of Fame president, tells Pratt that maybe one of your bats would end up in the Hall of Fame. Man, and then Pratt went off to have have a four hit night, including the go ahead 12th inning home run, which they ended up not winning, but had that stuck. That would have been the game winner, right? What he's told by the Hall of Fame, maybe we'll take one of your bats. But then in in in Game Five, his first two hits, his first two at bats, were also hits, which meant he had the longest consecutive hit streak by a rookie in the history of the World Series. He had six hits in a row, six straight at bats over two games.
Pottymouth 13:05
Is he 22 or 23? One or the other. He is one of the other. He is so much younger than our children.
Patti 13:11
Bryce Trang's cleats. Bryce Trang like made the final out to you know win the series. His cleats are going. And lastly, the the Bob Euchre jersey, either Robin Yang wore when he when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch in Game One. So all of these things are on the way to the Hall of Fame and never again to be touched by anybody's human hands if they're not in gloves. For context, the Hall of Fame overall for an entire season gets between 40 and 50 items. So as things happen, they might solicit those items over the course of the year, and the former president Jeff Idelson, who who we talked to right from C or B here, he said it's like the North Pole in reverse. The elves are out across the country, and everything's coming to Cooperstown.
Pottymouth 13:53
That's so awesome.
Patti 13:54
So those are my stories, my my world series related stories. What do you have?
Pottymouth 13:58
I'm going to talk about baseball boyfriends, the guys that I picked because I'm excited that I had a guy on each team. And last week we left off between games two and three, which was right after my raised boyfriend Jonathan Ronda did a Bill Buckner style error with the ball going between his legs, and we had just found out that he was going to be indeed benched for game three, so my my Brewer's boyfriend, I feel like was you know sort of trying to match up that that mojo. Game four, this I had myself yelling at the screen for this one. So David Hamilton is my Brewers guy, and I I'm about to just sort of go off on gushing over David Hamilton and how much he superseded any expectations of him, I believe this season. Oh, I agree. Yeah. So game four was a crazy play where he missed the tag on Junior Caminero, past baseball boyfriend of mine for the Rays, and Junior makes it to third base now. The the problem with the the review on this tag is they could only review the glove just missing Junior's cleat. I believe it was like it was so close to hitting the chat tag. What that was not reviewable was Junior running off the base path. He had two steps on the grass. I feel like that should have been out, and I was not happy about that. There's
Patti 15:25
an actual measurement. I can't remember if it's like you know three feet or five. I don't remember what it is, but there's a certain like when they're going to make a tag, you can evade it, but you only have a certain amount. And I think he was within that amount. But yeah, but you can't review it. I don't know why there are places that can't be reviewed.
Pottymouth 15:40
Right? If
Patti 15:40
there are things that a quick look at a video or a long look at video can solve, why are they not reviewable?
Pottymouth 15:46
Especially running off the base path, like you can see that. Like, and if it was like, I would feel so much better if he had been in that mathematical whatever quantity of being able to run off the path. But it just looked like he was running off the grass, and I was not happy at all because this is my guy David Hamilton, who then got an error because he overthrew to first base and Junior Maneros scored on the play. But Hamilton did what Aranda was not able to do, which was his very next at bat, he hit a home run, and that is monumental for David Hamilton, as we know, because he had four home runs in the season, one of which we saw. We saw number four, and he had two home runs in the postseason. So I'm thinking, is David Hamilton my new Kike Hernandez? Like he doesn't have the Kike spark or humor or any of that. However, he's got the Mister October thing. So on the season, David Hamilton, and when he was with the Red Sox, he was super utility. Like he was pinch hitting, brought in for for his speed, but he was not a starting player. And he goes over to the Brewers, and he's starting all five World Series games. He was pulled late in the game in Game One and Game Three for for Joey Ortiz, but he started every game. He had on the season a 245 average with 650 OPS, four home runs, as I said, and 30 stolen bases. Like that's his claim to fame. In the postseason, 333 average, 950 OPS, 300 points improvement with two home runs, half as many home runs and three stolen bases. Well, he's not going to you know compare to that 30 in the nine games that he played, eight of which he started, including as I said, all five World Series games. So I feel like David Hamilton was like this this diamond in the rough. Yeah, like he pulled through when it counted.
Patti 17:38
Yeah, no, no, for sure it was a smaller sample size, but I was the one texting you saying he's making a case for MVP.
Pottymouth 17:44
Yeah,
Patti 17:44
because he was coming through in clutches. I mean, he had a couple of those mistakes, but he made up for it in other ways, and he his bow was hot.
Pottymouth 17:51
Yeah, David fucking Hamilton was a text going back and forth several times, but who did get MVP? My former baseball boyfriend pick William Contreras, adorable, and I love how you said like that. So we we've been talking about Jonathan Aranda with the moment of poof because his hair, and we didn't have enough moments of poof with Aranda. He just fizzled so much. He just stopped doing stuff. However, William Contreras, you you mentioned has sprawing.
Patti 18:17
Yes, sprawing. Yes, yes, yeah,
Pottymouth 18:19
and and just greating, and great so much so much more. And he and Jackson Chorio, who is my last year's pick, who I failed. So I, you know, I felt bad about fuck. I fucked that up. Like I, I meant to keep him as my forever boyfriend. However, I wouldn't have all this fun stuff to say about David Shelton.
Patti 18:37
It's true. If I
Pottymouth 18:37
had kept Jackson Chorio, who did amazing and his offensive stats were were better measurably than William Contreras. But Contreras did everything, and I I'm appreciative that they took the defensive stuff into account apparently for the for the MVP because he threw runners out. His ABS was crazy, and the the one that he missed was like a millimeter. So
Patti 19:06
so tiny, so tiny. Do
Pottymouth 19:07
not blame him at all. And then you know the super cool thing about being world that that word that word world that we throw around for series champions, William Contreras, Jackson Chirio, and relief pitcher Antonio Senzatela were the first Latino players to win both the World Baseball Classic because Venezuela won, which was an amazing thing earlier this year, and the World Series in the same year. So that word "world" when you're talking about the World Baseball Classic, you're actually playing against other countries. It makes sense to say World World Series? I mean, Canada, right? You get you know the Toronto Blue Jays. It
Patti 19:47
counts as not U.S. It doesn't count as World.
Pottymouth 19:49
Crazy.
Patti 19:50
It's true.
Pottymouth 19:51
So we said Latino because previously Alex Bregman, who I have a lot of respect for as a player, and Luke Gregerson. Who I am not familiar with, but apparently was a reliever for the Astros in 2017. They were both on Team USA and the Astros team when the Astros won their cheating World Series. So does that count as having been players who won the World Baseball Classic and the World Series in the same year if they won it by cheating?
Patti 20:19
If you count that World Series, then yes. If you don't, then no. It's still on the books, so technically, yes, with an asterisk.
Pottymouth 20:28
Yes. So you guys can make up your mind. MVP Wilson William Contreras. I keep doing like his big brother, and that was an amazing moment. Like, did you see the Contreras, the three brothers like hugging right afterwards, so so cool. And and the older brother Wilson wearing his baby brother's jersey for that game, and he had just flown in from Hawaii. Like it's good that it got to game five, so the contreras could be there together. William was the seventh catcher to get MVP of the World Series and the third Venezuelan after Panda Sandoval Pablo Sandoval with the with the Giants and Salvador Perez, so good company. His interview afterwards, I feel like he's been getting a little bit of shit online because of people taking part of the quotation out of context, where he says, "I'm the best catcher in the world," and making it sound like he is arrogant about it, which I think he's not at all. I think he he was celebrating the moment. So the full quotation quote: "I'm proud of everything: hitting, abs, blocking, throwing to base, everything. I feel great. Yes, he did everything, and then he said, "I don't want to offend any of the other catchers in the league. The last thing I want to do is to offend any of them." But sitting up here today, champion of the world, I feel like I'm the best catcher in the league. He should. Right on. He totally should. So well deserved, and I think that's something to model also for our youth is you should be proud of your accomplishments, and I I think that's awesome. And so woo celebration highlights for me one of the biggest things was Milwaukee closed the schools. I think that is the right thing for the parade for the parade the day of the parade? Yes, thank you, thank you. Very important day of the parade, and the parade comes you know soon after, as soon as possible. It seems like it's kind of like a Jewish funeral right after the World Series win. You see how fast you can get the parade up. So it was on Friday. On Friday, yeah, they won
Patti 22:39
on Wednesday night. They had a Packers game on Thursday and the parade on Friday,
Pottymouth 22:43
and the superintendent announced it in an email apparently on Thursday to families, and it's interesting that they they framed it and maybe this was their priority that was because of quote district operations and safety, so the parade route going through so much of where people would have to go to and from school, and the timing made that happen. They also closed central offices. So I mean,
Patti 23:11
now now let's do some quick math. Does that get us from 400,000 to 750,000 spectators? It might open
Pottymouth 23:18
up.
Patti 23:18
It might.
Pottymouth 23:19
So I was wondering what did other cities do? L.A. did not close schools either in 24, which was on a Friday, or in 25, which was on a Monday. In 2023, when the Rangers won, and 2022, when the Astros actually won, those schools were closed. 2021, Atlanta one, and the city of Atlanta had a previously scheduled quote district holiday. I don't know what it was, but surrounding suburbs, which is where the stadium actually is, also closed. 2020, no parade. Famously, the the Dodgers felt cheated by that. But when we went in 2019, the Nats did it on a Saturday.
Patti 24:01
Sure,
Pottymouth 24:01
and you know that seems like a good way to get around this. Boston did not close in 2018, but school attendance was way down. There are no clear statistics I could find, but plenty of anecdotes. The thing about the Boston parade, Boston is full of colleges, it sure is. During the school year, literally 25% of the Boston population is students. So the parade goes through colleges. So college students, at least, were not going to class during that time. I think that closing schools is if you're not going to do it on a weekend, kind of a good rule of thumb for the celebratory purposes. Absolutely,
Patti 24:45
no, 100%.
Pottymouth 24:46
Did you see the jackets that they had, the the Letterman jackets?
Patti 24:49
No. So
Pottymouth 24:50
they are swanky. William Contreras was wearing one. Several other brewers were wearing one. Like classic sort of 50s style Letterman. Jackets, you can get one maybe for $1,000 is what they were selling them to for the the selling them for to the general public. $1,000. I don't
Patti 25:11
think my high school Letterman jacket costs that much. I don't know that it broke 100. I don't know. They
Pottymouth 25:16
were really cool, but they're almost sold. Like by the time you hear my voice, they might be sold out.
Patti 25:22
Sure,
Pottymouth 25:23
because they were that cool.
Patti 25:24
They were that cool, and it's not like this has ever happened really before. Right, right.
Pottymouth 25:29
So you
Patti 25:29
got to jump on the celebration. Sure.
Pottymouth 25:31
Speaking of folks who jumped on the celebration, one of the quickest announcements right after the win, two Brewers players announced their babies to be, and one of which was my baseball boyfriend David Hamilton. The other one, Dustin May, pitcher who famously now has three consecutive World Series's because he was with the Dodgers for both of those. So the babies are coming. I'm not quite sure when they're due yet. I'm guessing that'll become apparent pretty soon. Want to note that David Hamilton and his wife Mallory married in January. If you do that math on the honeymoon, it kind of works out. So who knows?
Patti 26:14
That baby would already be born if that was the case.
Pottymouth 26:17
So that yeah, like it's yeah,
Patti 26:20
yeah, it's pretty close. It's
Pottymouth 26:22
close.
Patti 26:22
Okay.
Pottymouth 26:23
Well, it depends. 40 weeks, nine months. Yeah. Don't worry about it. Yeah. All right. It'll be okay. Um, she does have a kid, Braxton Carter Wilfork, who was born in 2019 from a previous relationship. Shit, I
Patti 26:36
want to make Braxton Hicks jokes.
Pottymouth 26:38
Well, I was like Wilfork. I was like, no, no. I wonder if it's in the same family. But she's she was a cheerleader, a Texas A&M. I want to say cheerleader. And I just wish the best for David Hamilton and Mary Mallory and their kid, Aaron Ashby. You talked about his glasses. He, I just feel like he was so solid. He was such an amazing pitcher. And if it wasn't for William Contreras doing everything, I would think that Aaron Ashby. I mean, there were so many deserving. Yeah, there were several
Patti 27:14
that had a case made. Yeah,
Pottymouth 27:15
that's what makes them a World Series winning team, right?
Patti 27:19
Because it was a team.
Pottymouth 27:20
So many of them. So Ashby referred to that 750,000 that you said, and just in appreciation of the fans, said, "quote You guys brought the energy every night at home and three nights in Tampa, and then decided to show up 750,000 deep today and blow us away for six hours. Truly, the best fans of the world. You'll never convince me otherwise. And I feel like, as a baseball fan, that the power of the Milwaukee fans is what did it. Because in Milwaukee, home team advantage. In Tampa, no home team advantage. There was so much Milwaukee there because of what you talked about last week with the pricing and everything, and they
Patti 28:02
did all travel and they drank all the beer in Tampa. Really? Yeah, there was there was there was a lot of a really quick reference to like a place like right outside the the state and that said we sold a month's worth of beer in one night. You know, in like prior to the Milwaukee game. Yep. So there's that. Yay! So congratulations, Brewers! It was a fun series. It was a short series. I'm okay with that. And I need to say, you know, one of my coworkers is from Tampa, and she's like, "I just want to win one game." Yeah. And I'm like, "It's nothing against you. I'm just afraid of the Rays." I was my my thing was as soon as the Rays win one, they're coming back. And thankfully, that was not the case for me because I wanted the Brewers to win. It was fun. I really enjoyed watching this series. All right, let's go to the wider MLB picture, which is the first awards that were have been announced are the Players Choice Awards. These are the ones that are voted on by active players, right? It's run through the Players Union, the MLB PA, and they voted back in September, and they they announced the winners just just a couple days ago, so our boyfriends are everywhere. Mostly our past boyfriends. So Pete Crow Armstrong, who was my Cubs guy last year, got Player of the Year and National League Outstanding Player. He was the seventh player in MLB history with the 4040 season. This 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases, and he's the first player since 1991 when Cal Ripken Jr. did this to place in Fan Graf's top three in both offensive and defensive value. So all around, he's good stuff. Yeah. So there's. I hope so. I hope so because he's earned it. I mean, the numbers show that he has earned it. So Jordan Alvarez also two big awards. So he was my Houston boyfriend back in 2021. He was the the AL Outstanding Player. He was also the American League Comeback Player of the Year. Zach Wheeler was the National League Comeback Player of the Year. I can kind of claim him because I had Philadelphia pitching before. Outstanding rookie. One for us and one not for us. So American League Kevin McGonigle from Detroit. Neither of us was not on our radar, and you absolutely were all over the current Cincinnati boyfriend Sal Stewart, who was there nationally hoping for rugby
Pottymouth 30:12
of the year. There you go.
Patti 30:12
Chris Bassett from Baltimore got the Marvin Miller Man of the Year, and that was that's that's about kind of like it's a service, but it's service to players. It's largely union related. So good. And so he this award basically was for his service as a player representative to the union and also member of their executive committee. So he's doing super good work. And again, like long line of pitchers being very involved in the players union. And then my guy Jake Berger, I had him 2023 with the White Sox, and he's now with Texas. He got the Players Trust Philanthropist of the Year, and that comes with a $25,000 check to his chosen charity. Right, so he and his wife put together the the Jake Berger Foundation last year. They have a child who was born with Down syndrome, and so he has turned a lot of his public focus and his fundraising to that. And so one of the things they did, they developed what's called the Lucky Ranch in Nashville, which creates employment opportunities for adults with disabilities. His foundation has promoted advocacy, inclusion, and acceptance. They hosted a Down Syndrome Awareness Day at Globe Life Field, which benefited local organizations that work on Down syndrome, which is cool. And so, like a way to raise funds and support lots of groups that are on the ground, right? They're doing things on the ground. He has his number 21 is meaningful for Down syndrome, and so that that's his his jersey number, and so they have they're donating proceeds from every every number 21 burger jersey sold at Globe Life Field to you know to all of all of these all of these fundraising opportunities all all of these charities that are working on helping people with Down syndrome and their families and supporting their families. Also, separate from all of that, the burgers underwrote seven food distributions at the Rangers Youth Academy in West Dallas. Seven of them, and that's you know that's a lot of money. Yeah, and and you know so he's showing up. Good. He's shown out. He's you know he's making this personal experience of having this child who was born with Down syndrome being a thing that he can be a role model for. He can do boots on the ground. He can raise money, and it's like they could have kept this very private. And like you know what, we can help people if we don't keep it private. We can help a lot of people. So yay for Jake Burger. Um, so these are really cool, and so many more awards to come over the next couple weeks.
Pottymouth 32:41
Yeah, absolutely, and I think some of those will be multiple. Actually, tonight is Gold Glove, so you guys know that, and we don't. But we do know that we are in the hot stove, so we are sparking up that fire and starting to watch. My first reaction was, okay, what if my 2026 boyfriend are gonna be traded? I mean, we're gonna be picking new guys soon, but you know we still have these guys, and I think that Ramon Loriano is my only free agent. He was the only one in the announced 144. He was on the Padres, and he was injured pretty much the whole season, so I did not benefit from having him on my roster. But I would like to see him have a nice landing. He's getting up there, and it would be nice to see him, you know, end his career in a good place. The only other one that I was kind of wondering about was Gustavo Campero, who barely saw the light of day in MLB this year. He played four MLB games in August. He was not listed in that 144, but he was on a one-year minor league contract. So I'm not sure what's happening with him next year. But he was my Angels pick, who did not help my my roster in any way. But he's such a good guy. Go back to that episode. He's such a good guy.
Patti 34:04
So there's a schedule for the hot stove. Some of which is going to be active for the next month, and some of which may get punted pretty far down the line with a lockout probably on december 1. So oh,
Pottymouth 34:15
that's here's how.
Patti 34:17
Here's kind of the schedule for free agency, right? And remember, it's the hot stove because we're going to gather around. You know, now it's the water cooler or whatever. Now it's probably now our phones. But you know, gather around the stove, and what are you going to talk to when the cold day is the winter? But you know what the trades are, who's moving around in baseball until baseball starts up again. So the first five days after the World Series ends, we just concluded that five-day period. That's a window where teams and their players who are eligible to become free agents can negotiate all those players who have team options. The team has the option, or they have the option in their contract to stay with the team. So that starts then, and then once. That time is done, which is hey november 1. That sounds like today for us when we're recording. That's when the wider world of free agency opens up and players can start talking to other teams. So, you may have heard over the past couple days, oh, this team, you know, accepted, you know, is taking this option. This player took this option of declined this option. This this option became a free agent. So 11 players declined options or had options declined on their behalf. So the total number of free agents now is 155 because it includes those 11. Okay. Right. That in this in this little exclusive window. Right. So now there's 155. Just so you have an idea of the range of where real turnover could happen, Atlanta and the Cubs have 11 each, 11 free agents each. The Yankees and the Padres have 10 each, and the Mets, St. Louis and Washington, have 00. So today's was also the last day to issue qualifying offers to free agents, and they have until november 17 to accept that offer if they want to, or to say nope. There's there's bigger money out there. Thank you, but no, thank you. It's also that's when the posting window opens for Japanese professional players, the the the NPV, so those teams can post their players as available for recruitment, basically by MLB teams. And from the day they are posted, there are 45 days where MLB teams can negotiate and try to sign Japanese players who are saying, "I want to go to play in MLB." And if you remember, the the the Japanese teams then get a cut of that of that contract decision if their player gets accepted into MLB. Now the lockout December 1, if there is a lockout, it will likely honor any contracts that happened before the lockout. So any new collective bargaining agreement that happens.
Pottymouth 37:02
Okay,
Patti 37:02
you know it'll start that the current one expires on december 1, so we're still under that current bargaining agreement. So contracts that are signed now until December 1 will be honored or should be honored after the new CBA begins because it was done before this current CBA expired, and that should be the same for these international signings as well. Okay, so the next thing that happens, november 10 through 12th is the the GM meetings. That's usually where trades are discussed. Trades will likely still be discussed then, and if they're going to happen, they're either going to happen immediately, or they're going to be put off indefinitely, right? November 17 through 19th, the next week is the owners' meeting, and they are mainly going to talk about how the lockout's going to work, because you know if they're not going to move forward on negotiations and try to get something signed before it expires, what they're going to be talking about is here are the rules for the lockout. The 20th is the non-tenders deadline, where you have to sign, you know, folks to new contracts if you're going to sign them to new contracts. And then december 1, the CBA expires. Likely there will be a lockout. When there's a lockout, there's no talking to players by the team.
Pottymouth 38:21
Yeah,
Patti 38:21
no player players. There's no use of team facilities or staff. And as we talked about before, I hope your holiday cards are already mailed because even those you're not allowed to do unless they're already postmarked, you know, before december 1. So any future dates, like when arbitration is supposed to happen, when pitchers and catchers are supposed to report. Is the Rule Five draft going to happen? Oh my God! Is the draft lottery order going to be decided? All of those things would normally happen after december 1, so those might just be kicked way the heck down the road because there's likely going to be a lockout. That's depressing. It's depressing as fuck. So you know, I'm hoping that some teams will move quickly to get some things done.
Pottymouth 39:04
Yeah, and
Patti 39:04
then we'll sit around and wait.
Pottymouth 39:06
I'm just glad that you're here to guide us through that lottery mess.
Patti 39:11
I'm always here for you.
Pottymouth 39:12
Holy shit! All right, so it seems appropriate to go from there into our police broader we we we we we
Patti 39:21
our police slaughter slaughter. Okay,
Pottymouth 39:25
okay. Do you remember Wander Franco? I actually picked him as my baseball boyfriend, sadly, for the Rays in 2022.
Patti 39:34
Now is a good time to say we have former boyfriends and ex-boyfriends. That's
Pottymouth 39:38
right. He is an ex-boyfriend because he has absolutely fucked up because in 2023, all sorts of shit started coming to the surface about his relationship with an underage, like 14 year old woman. He was arrested. The woman's mother was arrested. The girl. Oh my god! I don't even know how to deal with that. But there's. Been various iterations of court for him, and the last that I talked about him was that he had actually received a judicial pardon, which meant that he was convicted for psychological and sexual abuse of a minor, which is horrific, horrific. But I'm not a Dominican lawyer, so this is all kind of fuzzy for me, and it's all through the the lens of my understanding of articles in Diario Libre, which is a Dominican newspaper. But he, at after appeals, was being pardoned so that he had the conviction, but no time served. So the the importance of the conviction meant that he was not going to come to the United States because a convicted like aggressive felon is not going to get any kind of visa no matter how many strings they have with MLB. Just when you thought that was all over, his pardon was revoked this week by the appeals court, so no longer is he pardoned from serving time in prison. This was three days ago. The prosecution said that the pardon was incorrectly applied because his guilty charges were so fucking bad that they were actually too severe for this judicial pardon. Which is what I was wondering at the time. Like, how bad does it have to be? Right. How can you do this? It's still not clear if he'll actually do time. There's going to be some sort of punishment that the newspaper at the time of recording hadn't specified. But the idea is, if he doesn't do the things, then it's a suspended sentence. I think is is the way to look at it that he would actually be going to prison if he didn't fulfill the things that he'd be as stupid as fuck to not actually do. The prosecution is again pushing for the minimum of five years, which he should honestly get. And this is not the end because either side can appeal to the Dominican Supreme Court. For those wondering, the mother's 10-year sentence. So the mother of the the the girl that he had this relationship with had been given 10 years of prison for commercial sexual exploitation, basically trafficking her own daughter. Horrific, but the fact that she would get a worse punishment than the guy who did it with all these this funding that you know he's buying this from the mother. It's just so repulsive. Is is clearly you know it's because he has a lot more money than she does. Anyway, her her 10 year sentence was reaffirmed, so she will be at this point serving 10 years unless she has well-paid lawyers who are going to appeal. This comes into play when you're thinking about the World Series, because Wanda Franco had just been signed a monumental multi-year deal with the Rays right before all this went down, and it was very out of character for the Rays to spend that much money on somebody, but he was that good. He was shortstop, and if he were playing shortstop in this World Series, it's the big question: is like, what would
Patti 43:14
happen? Would
Pottymouth 43:14
things have been different? So their World Series shortstop was Taylor Walls, who had no hits over the World Series, over five games, zero hits. He walked once. He stole one base on the postseason. He had four hits overall. 103 average. 289, like an anemic OPS. On the season in 2026, he had a 222 average with a 607 OPS. So this hurt the Rays. It definitely hurt the Rays, so that you know shows that character counts. Teams need to do their research, and they need to enable these like young players from very poor backgrounds who are getting a shit ton of money give them a little bit of guidance.
Patti 43:57
This makes me wonder if that is the reason why the Rays are so gun shy on signing free agents. Yep, because like, look, we had this gigantic big splashy thing, and it bit us in the butt.
Pottymouth 44:06
Yep, absolutely
Patti 44:08
could be true. One more police blotter item. We talked about these guys for a while, and then it all went quiet because things got put off. But do you remember Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, former Guardians pitchers? Their trial begins on Monday, so yesterday, for those of you listening to the show, and it drops on Tuesday, they were both accused of rigging pitches in the context of sports betting, right? So they wanted to benefit financially from sports betting, so they were rigging pitches. Luis Ortiz, I think it was two pitches he was accused of rigging, and it was a bunch more for for classic.
Pottymouth 44:44
Oh, it's so sad. I know. This makes no fucking sense.
Patti 44:47
The two of them have been on unpaid leave since July 2025. They had to surrender their passports. Their travels restricted. The full charges include wire fraud, conspiracy, something called honest. Services wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to influence sports contests by bribery and money laundering conspiracy. If they are convicted of all of those things, which I don't think is actually likely, but I don't know, that's up to 65 years. 65 years. So I think there are things that I mean. MLB is like, well, we've changed a couple of things. They've changed hardly anything that actually matters. Get rid of sports betting. Yes. Stop. Stop promoting it. Stop it in your game. Stop taking their money. And this stuff doesn't happen. Get ahead of it. Prevent it.
Pottymouth 45:37
And there's another one. Like, what would have happened to Cleveland?
Patti 45:40
What would have happened if they
Pottymouth 45:40
had had class A?
Patti 45:42
Yep.
Pottymouth 45:42
Right.
Patti 45:43
Yes, indeed.
Pottymouth 45:45
All right. So if you're feeling a little sad because the season is over, I want to remind you that there's plenty of baseball still happening south of the border. If you have an MLB subscription, you can get Lidam Games. That's the Dominican Republic, and a very reasonable. If you look to baseball play, which is B E I S B O L, it's did I say that in English? Yeah. Okay. That that um. It's it's uh it's the Venezuelan League. It's and I didn't write down how much it was, but I already paid it. No big deal. You get to see Venezuelan games. I think
Patti 46:19
that means you can use Potty Mouse login. That's just how I'm bad.
Pottymouth 46:21
Right, right, right. Contact me. You'll get you my login info, or you know, support some Venezuelan baseball. There you go. That Venezuela's been through a lot, going through a lot. They're going to have streaming service. Choque de gigantes, the clash of the the Giants or Titans, I guess. November 14 to 15, very close in Miami. Two of the Venezuelan teams are going to be playing in U.S. soil to, you know, encourage folks to go and support them. And there is some fun stuff happening with MLB players. So Miguel Rojas, who just retired from the Dodgers, very sad to not go to another World Series, but you know he's he's had his time. He's going to be taking the field for the Tibronees de Huayra, and they're playing against the Navagantes de Magallanes, which is Yari Molina's team, I believe the Navagantes. Tiburones, I think the Acunas were on that, or at least the the Elder Acuna. So Miguel Rojas is doing this as sort of like his swan song of playing. He's retired, but he's playing this one more game because the Tiburones was how he got his start. He got his start in LVBP, and from there went to MLB. I think he was he was drafted by the Reds, and then he was let go, and then the Dodgers picked him up for a year, and then he was eight years in Miami. So this is lovely that he gets to go back and you know doff his cap to the Marlins. He was your pick in 2020. My pick for Minnesota in 2020 was Luis Arias, who's been doing the PR for this as well, and he has a tie to the other team, to the Navagantes. I'm not sure if he's actually going to be playing, but that would be really cool if two of our 2020 that year baseball boyfriends were playing in this this game in Miami. I was excited to see that my boyfriend, who I had picked with the Yankees, excuse the expression for this past year, you know, this podcast has taught me to appreciate players of all teams. I picked Jorbit Vivas for the Yankees, and I was very happy that he didn't spend much time there because then he came to the Nationals. He didn't have a great season, but as many players who need a little bit of extra oomph are playing in the winter leagues. He's playing for the Tigres de Aragua in the Venezuelan league, and just yesterday he had a home run and five RBI in an 11 to two victory over the Bravos de Margarita, who I'd really hope to look into a little bit more, because if any of you are Latin music fans Rabayana, which is a really hot Venezuelan group. The lead singer, whose name I totally forget, has an ownership stake in the Bravos de Margarita, and he is going to be promoting them a lot. So
Patti 49:17
wow, check
Pottymouth 49:17
out his music. He's a lot of fun.
Patti 49:20
All right, so MLB baseball is done for a little while. So what are we going to do with our time? I'm
Pottymouth 49:28
going to watch lead on in Venezuelan baseball as well as I don't know other fun stuff. We're going to keep an eye
Patti 49:36
on all the awards that's coming out for sure.
Pottymouth 49:39
That's what we're going to do. Right, right. Gold Glove is tonight. You guys know we don't. Did Caleb Durbin win third base? Can you? Can you guys just tell me, please? I'm really, really hoping he did. November, but then we've got some betting because we made our predictions, and I believe we're going to be talking about this maybe next the two weeks. I think because november 9 is. Rookie of the Year, the 10th is Manager of the Year, 11th is Cy Young, 12th is is
Patti 50:06
PCA.
Pottymouth 50:06
Yeah, exactly. So I think that's all. Not next next week's show because I can do my math. That would be November night. Yeah, we got two weeks on this.
Patti 50:15
Yep. All right. So I'm gonna be keeping an eye on those things, and I'm gonna be encouraging everybody I know to get out there and vote yes, like your life depends on it, because frankly, it does. So many people's
Pottymouth 50:24
does.
Patti 50:25
So yeah, so if you are hearing this podcast and you haven't voted yet, please hit pause and go do your voting, do your civic duty, and then come back and listen to the rest of the story. Yes. Okay. So here's my question that I'm posing to our listeners. I have. I'm very interested in Cooper Pratt as a possible boyfriend, and as Potty Beth pointed out, he's a Mormon. And one of our one of our ways we would I enjoy having a beer with him? Is he allowed to have a beer? I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. So can you please express opinions about whether I should pursue this whole is is Cooper Pratt going to be my pick? Because everything other than that is like absolutely, absolutely. He seems exactly right for me. Except I don't know that we'd have a lot to talk about outside of baseball. And if you want to have a beer with somebody, you want to be able to have a conversation.
Pottymouth 51:15
Yeah. So he famously was gonna have cider for his celebration instead of instead of champagne, and it was going to blend in, and somebody dropped the ball, and so he had to do an emergency run, and he got Fanta orange, which seems very very sticky. So I think if you would like to have a Fanta with him, then he could be a boyfriend.
Patti 51:41
I'd have to spike it with something.
Pottymouth 51:43
That's. I think that's fair. Okay, that's maybe a
Patti 51:45
smoked bourbon and fanta. Oh, that sounds horrible. No, there's going to be something. Tequila, tequila would go with Fanta. Okay. Yeah. Anyway, anyway. So what I'm saying is, if you have opinions about my possibly picking Cooper Pratt, and would you still respect me? You know, the next day, if I did. Please find us on social media and express your opinions.
Pottymouth 52:02

Pottymouth 53:18
But you're charming.
Patti 53:19
I am charming. Thank you for noticing.
Pottymouth 53:22
You deserve a. I feel
Patti 53:23
like I do.
